Catholic News And Notes

Now that the illness of the Pope has become grave a good deal of attention is focussed on him from all over the world. There can be few living men whose ille can so well bear scrutiny. Prior to his election to the Papacy at the age of sixty-Ave, he had a varied car- eer as scholar, professor, librarian, diplomat, and administrator, and for fourteen years he has been the head of the Catholic Church- in all his tasks he has acquitted himself with devotedness and abil ity, and always with honour. The career of a scholar was that for which he seemed marked out' at arst- he taught Hebrew to Mar. | Valtorta. the Vicar Apostolic of

the Pope's representative in foreign countries, and then he was appointed Archbishop of Milan, his own clty, where he received such a welcome as has rarely been accorded to any ecclesiastic in mo- dern times His administration of the Catholic Church as Pope has been characterised by courage and vision, and he has won the respect of those to whom respect for the Papacy is not accounted a virtue. In the painful illness with which he was stricken he has received sympathy from all, and history will certainly regard him as one who had attributes of greatness.

THE TURN OF THE YEAR

As far as the ceremonies of the Catholle Church are concerned, the end of the Old Year counts more than the beginning of the New, New Year's Day isan In portant Church feast, the Circum cision of Our Lord, but the fact that the day is also New Year's Day is ignored in Catholic ritual. The end of the year, however, is generally celebrated by a service of thanksgiving, at which is sung the **Te Deum,"

a fourth century hymn, that is perhaps the noblest expression of praise of God that ever came from the pen of mán. The solemn singing of this makes one of the most impressive cere- moules in the Church,

It is sometimes asked why the same expression of thanks is offer- ed at the end of years of bad for- tune as well as after years of ptos- perity. The reason is plain, be- cause the belief of Catholics in a Creator and Lord who loves His creatures makes men accept con-. Adently dis blessings even those things which by human, as oppoA- ed to supernaturas, standards would be regarded as misfortunes. It ta

natural, however, that thanksgiving should be more fer- vent in times of good fortune. This

Year's "Te Deum" can be sung with more feelings of thankful- ness than for many years in the past.

Sergeant Pockson stated that on December 19 at 12.15 am con- stable C297 was on duty at Wal- chat district. It was alleged that he saw the defendant approaching from the stair-case of 69, Wanchai Road. When the defendant was about two yards in front of the constable, he dodged and ran past him. The constable gave chase and arrested the defendant around a corner of an unknown lane,

While the policeman was chas ing the defendant, he noticed a parcel being thrown to the side of the road. The parcel was later picked up and in it were 500 heroin pills. The defendant was brought to the police station and charged with the possession of dangerous drugs.

C297's evidence was not clear.so the defendant was discharged. Mr. Laseby told his Worship that the constable's evidence was too much imagination for in the first place the man was not sure of "Wanchai district and, in the second place, he could not have seen the de tendant take out a parcel and throw it for his back was facing the defendant,

The heroin was confiscated and the defendant was accordingly dia- charged,
