A man handles his hat in the company of others more often than any other thing he wears. It thus more easily becomes the subject of conversa- tion. That means he gets more opportunity for pride in the possession of a good hat than in any other article of his dress.

A "GLYN" HAT

The Court of Appeal decided recently, by a majority, that the Admiralty was not entitled to re- mumeration for salvage services rendered by warships, which went to the aid of another ship on fire and towed her 900 miles safely to port...

INCARCERATED

Appearing before Mr. W. Scho- deld at the Central Magistracy on remand yesterday morning, Li Ming, 25, unemployed, charged with the larceny of various articles of clothing and an alarm clock, valued at $30, the property of Poon Sing-kui, broker, of 73 Leigh- ton Hill Road, on December 26, was sentenced to six weeks' hard labour on each charge and a fine of $10.10 with the alternative of two weeks' imprisonment, making a total of twenty weeks. There was also another charge of similar Jarcény from Li Shek-yung, spins- ter. of 39 Leighton Hill Road, on the same day.

2:

Sergeant stall, prosecuting, stated that Hut Yu-kong, one of the witnesses, was walking past 39, Leighton Hill Road when he saw the first complainant chase after the defendant. He joined in the chase and defendant was ap- prehended atfer a long run. Most of the property was recovered from pawn shops later.

It was revealed that the delen- dant resided above the first com plainant's address and had lower- ed himself into the lower fat by means of a rope to carrying out the thefts.

agreement had been signed.

Lord Justice Blesser, giving Judgment, with which Lord Justice Scott agreed, said it had been argued that the salvage agree- ment must he read as applying only to the service of the com- mander or crew of the warships. In his view this contention failed. His "lordship agreed that the court had no jurisdiction to en- tertain a claim for services which had been mentioned as excluded by the Merchant Shipping Acts. Mr. Justice Branson, he said, was in error in applying the principles

"contracting out" to this case.

Wu Won, 60-year-old unemploy- ed, was brought before Mr. W. Schoßeld at the Central Magistracy yesterday for exposing obscene pic- tures for sale at Cross Street on December 30.

Lord Justice Slesser considered that the prohibition in the Merchant Shipping Act of the right to claim for services was general in fis nature, and not enacted solely for the benefit of those persons who were to receive the services. It was legislation of the Kind which could not be waived.
