STAY-IN GOWNS

A Sunday Night At

Home Fashion

Sunday night at home gowns have taken on a new significance since Schiaparelli made this a term for clothes that are neither cock- tall nor exactly informal dinner but just, well. "stay-in" gownal

They are smoothly fitted with slender trains. One in black vel- vet has long sleeves and closed Empire waisted 'corsage showing a ruche rising from the centre front skirt, which opens over a pastel- coloured kilted satin petticoat slip. A similar outline but semi-fitted Instead of Empire high-waisted persuasion is also being adopted. The petticoat is eliminated from this black velvet gown which I saw worn by a hostess at home, the skirt wrapped over to one side "under a pale blue "turquoise stud-

ded belt.

Wider belts are tailored to shape corselet wise from gold, and allver lame with geometrical designs in Brilliant colours such as scarlet and emerald green They com- plete the gowns from Lanvin which cling to the figure in soft white crepe romain as well as silver and gold lame Ground-length skirta are either simply gathered or sun- ray plisse and have baby bodices, with long "bishop sleeves. These gowns are a graceful young style for informal dinners and party nights at home or abroad.

The latest Molyneux contribu- tom is definitely "stay-in" on tal lored lines in velvet or lace. This is the full-length, and has a slight ly trained dressing gown move- ment of sleeek outline and sport- ing inspiration with patch pockets and centre front-button fasten- tips which cease, to function from beneath the knees.

Domestic And Informal

Domestic clothes have an interest

of their own this season. Infor- mal velvet dinner gowns,, tunic gowns, tailored lames, and allian- ces of velvet with net and wool and wool lace and fine woollen cloths have given rise to fresh Ideas. The high neckline, revived from the nineties, has added a neatness to buttoned fronts by day; and buttons covered in frock materiali are 8 consequence: A chestnut-brown woollen frock has a wallower velvet bolera with scalloped edges applied to it; the buttons are brown and piped in the velvet.

"

Velvet as a dinner dress material is seen best in princess lines. A close-fitting deep sapphire-blue velvet dinner gown, high at the back but with a curve at the nape of the neck and a deep curve in front, has been made with a little train and a girdlesash tied in front and fished with a tassel. Sleek panne velvet is again in fashion for dinner and afternoon frocks. A supple gold lace frock with elbow sleeves is mounted on brown panne” velvet which forms the stitched. 'belt... A successful black tunic frock is of net with black velvet leaves applied on the high trans- parent shoulder line and the tunic and the skirt. Velveteen has also returned; usually it is for autumn tailored suits, but it is now used for skirts of tunic suits, the tunics wool being of bright metal and striped material.

The tunic is a much criticized fashion; it is said to cut the wearer' and shorten the figure. There are, however, many tunics besides the straight and circular; there is for instance the tunic coat, tailored in brilliant which when

lame with Persian stripings and buttoned down with the front opening at the waist adds rather than takes away height. Other tunics dip at the back; others are slit at the sides; others are short and like over-blouses; Cire satins are in use besides lames, and lace has been stiffened to stand out like a lamp-shade. A black bro- cade tunic evening gown shows the tunic cut like a Directoire coat and trimmed with rows of cording of the material. Some of the after- noon tunic frocks in one material, such as rosalba, "have an apron tunic in front only. An after- noon frock of black faced cloth has a tunic standing out in a circle; embroideries made of the strong cloth are mounted on net to act as a trimming on the bodice; a silver band under the net crosses the shoulder Hne and a silver belt emphasizes the neat waist A tunic effect at the back only is seen on some frocks, and a frock oft blue crepe afternoon has been given a pleated panel at the back of the skirt, while the front show a short bolero effect.

Dinner suits, with short-Atting. coats nipping in at the waist and Jutting out at the back, are of cloque which requires no trimming. and also of either black or pastel faced cloth. There are luncheon frocks of a mixture of gunmetal and wool; they are tailored simply and usually button down the front; their dulled, glitter needs no trim ming. Some of the faconne velvets lend themselves to new treatment. A burgundy velvet faconné in

ninon with a light scattered de sign has been mounted on cardinal red for a princess dinner gowni with long sleeves. Velvet sathes of two contrasting colours enliven sombre clothes; and again and again by day velvet is an ally. In sports clothes it supplies a cravat scarf, and it pipes seams and Covers buttons of tailored suits.
