Narrow Shapes In Winter Caps And Turbans: Veils Of Many Colours
(BY THE HON, MRS. C. W. FORESTER)
One must admit that many of the new shapes are distinctly queer, There is something almost absurd about the tiny forage caps, made of fur, felt or velvet. Starfish vell and topknots of piquant bows and knots placed at one side give a still more jaunty look.
Such tiny millinery creations should be reserved strictly for -youth, or worn by a very chic type of modern woman. The best mil- iners have many styles to offer. The new versions of the tricorn are generally becoming,
old. that favourite shape in black felt with broadtall edging is wearable by many women, even with its some- time squarer shovel-like front. The harder narrowed Napoleonic shape is good where it suits, but it must be poised properly. It is generally adorned with galon, and goes well with tailored severity.
There are two definite and op- posing styles that alone would give rodern millinery an interest. There are the small caps or tur- bans I have referred to that slope almost to the nose in front or over one ear on the slant... All the trim- mings are accentuated to further this 'push-forward idea.
Exactly the opposite has arrived In the latest halo, which in itself is a lovely affair. known 23 the "Madonna "Halo." One model I saw was in black antelope and was worn as a bonnet, far back on the head, the whole front being filled by rouleaux of beautiful blue and purple velvet. These crossed at the back and were brought round un- der the chin to tie in scarf-style in" front.
At the winter cocktail parties these opposing back or forward methods of wearing them will be much in evidence. An all-black small halo in velvet has the, up-l turned front made in small pink and black ostrich plumea, An all-i black feather-bunch covers the' hair at the back of another model with a futed jockey-cap peak em- broidered with Jet. This peak dip- bed forward a little.
Parisiennes are enamoured of a torpedo-like toque that 18.too nar- row in style for the average Eng- lish face. Black antelope shaped like the narrowest boat had the centre filled in with coloured fan- tasies. Black, green, and purple, with sapphire blue and pink as trimming, are popular colours.
Another favourite in black unteolope is a Reboux turban very high and narrow, but laced through with a scari of grass-green Jamé splashed with silver. This fitted down on the head in a pointed but a snug manner-both back and front-proved more easy to wear than the high sugar-loaf turbans. A lovely colour scheme in one of these narrow torpedo toques, known as blue shadows, shows black with feathery frouds in blue, grey and black.
Boftness in hats makes for a flat- tering frame. and this is where some of the strange coloured veils can help. They are not worn over the face, but as choux in front, back or sides, to give alluring

darkening shadows. The bunch- ed vell is generally exactly the same colour as the hat itself. A pale tangerine velvet shape has a bunched halo of net, and a black antelope cap a choux of black and begonia pink net.
Flowers are giving place to fen- thers. A peacock blue shape, with the open crown filled in with clus- ters of dark bottle green feathers, is an attractive colour scheme.
Apart from ostrich, coloured co- feathers make a brave show again: they can provide a good decora tion for the harder beaver or felt a lovely new shapes. There is petrol shade, almost a river green -It is especially flattering to falr golden hair.

Likes Crepe With Wool Lace
Dull crepe and wool lace in a wood'violet shade compose the dinner dress worn by Betty Grable, blonde RKO Radio player. The gown is made on a modified Em pire silhouette, high-necked in front and a low decolletage in back. The long sleeves have the approved broad-shouldered effect. An insert of the lace is placed in the back of the slim skirt, giving enough fnlines for it to fall into a slight train.

The newest and most becoming shades in sporting hose are the speckled beige and brown tones, with a tiny spotted design. This hustery resembles the partridge-. tweed-shade, but sometimes a tiny yellow or red speck alternates with the dark-brown spot. Neutral tints seem to work un to a new fashionable range of colours. Take, for example, the - rustic, almost burnt-orange tint. It is a distinct change, and for winter especially is most cheering. Rustic is the correct choice with black dr dark, brown and dark- green ensembles... Tals range suggests the sun, and yet appears to be in harmony with any of our darker ensembles.

"Possibly this colour is favoured because it blends so admirably with rich furs. The black and brown skins are delightful when picked up and so graduated downwards in colour: The rustic stocking, with two-coloured antelope and calf kid shoes, is good with the mink coat. The rustic-colour stockings for day wear are generally in a fairly sub- stantial silk.
With grey furs, hosiery takes on more misty colourings, yet we all know that a pearly-grey stocking is seldom smart for day-time. The most satisfactory solution is a lin net tint or light gun-metal that has a hint of mole in its compos- tion..
There is nothing, more difficult than to select a smart tone to work in with grey. Greys have s way of turning lato quite differ ent, shades by night so, for the short winter days we have to hit on a perfect compromise to suit both daylight and artificial light. The range is so vast that this can be done, and even a beige-grey compromise could be arrived at.
The belge range, on the other hand, is comparatively easy. Her colours are so softly graduated from palest beige to one nearing a muddy tone.
