Sir Thomas And Lady Southorn Farewelled
LAUDATORY SENTIMENTS
EXPRESSED
The Chinese Community and their many friends yesterday gave eloquent testimony of the esteem in which they held Sir Thomas and Lady Southorn, when these two respected members of the local community were the guests of honour at a farewell tea party held at the Hong Kong Hotel, first floor. Sir Thomas, Governor Designate of Gambia, and Lady Southern are leaving on May 2; and laudatory" praises of "the work accomplished by Sir Thomas and Lady Southorn during their ten years sojourn in Hong Kong were contained in a valedictory address read by Sir Shou Son Chow, who presided at the gathering.
Sir Thomas in reply thanked all for their kind expressions and extended an invitation to any while in England to pay a visit to the Gambia, where he assured all the warmest of welcome in every respect of the word would be extended..
A Distinguished Gathering
Sir Andrew Caldecott, accom- panied by Captain W. J. R. Gragg (ADC) and Mr. H. J. Cruttwell - (private secretary} graced the
party with his presence.
As a momento of the secasion,
Sir Thomas and Lady Southorn
There is a wise saying of old that the proper way of government is only attained by diligent attention to duty, thorough consideration of all matters, and uprightness of Uving, and that if one follows these
three rules he seldom falls to be come a good administrator. We hall this saying; it is clearly exem- 'plified in yourself.
brilliance to Chinese learning and to expound its culture. For your valuable services the University conferred upon you the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws, thereby eliciting the admiration of scholars."
A REAL FRIEND
We have therefore come to realise that out of loving kindness you are not only affectionate to your own relations and kindly dis- posed to people generally, but that you are also a real friend to the Chinese people. It has been ob served that if an administrator has virtue he does not always have. ability, and if he has ability, he may lack virtue; but Your Honour has both, and it is on this account that you have become a good off- cial, one who brings prosperity to his country,
For a man to rise, however, to the height of his endeavour, to carry out his principles, and to benefit this generation, he must have" some assistance before his efforts are crowned with success. In Lady Southern you found the required assistance.
