ITALIAN ADVANCE TO
BE CONTESTED
("Hong Kong Daily Press" Special)
Addis Ababa, April 24. Desperate efforts are being made day and night to convert the Capital into a fortress capable of offering a stubborn resis- tance to the Italians, the hope being apparently that the rains might ultimately prevent the enemy from carrying out their plans for the complete conquest of the country,
All the available troops from near and far are being hur ried north with the object of putting a strong force on top of every summit' commanding every pasa or valley between Dessic and Addis Ababa, thus converting the whole region into an arm- ed camp which will contest every inch of territory against the advancing Italians.
Columns of volunteers working unceasingly, are blowing up all the roads to Addis Ababa so as to make them impassable. Even if these measures merely retard progress until the begin- ning of June, when the heavy rains set in, much will be gained as the Italians could then be harrassed by well organised guerilla warfare,
This would make the Italian position difficult as the lines are How 30 protracted. Abyssinian milltary circles declare that the danger of the invasion of Addis Ababa has already been averted' so that there is no longer any ques- tion of the Government deserting
the Capital and leaving it to the Italians without a fight.
The Abyssinians declare that after three days of fierce fighting at Sholomeda Pass between Dessle and Worra Hailu, all the Italian attacks have been repulsed, the Italians falling to take the moun-
tain positions.- Transocean News Service, 2

Mr. Chamberlain sald that no doubt if powers were taken to control the country's industries combined with some control over labour. the Goverment's programme could be speeded up materially, but very grave implications were bound to be associated with a step of that kind.
Everyone could imagine the circumstances in which it might become necessary to take such powers, but if they assumed them prematurely the Government would have to bear responsibility" for dislocation in industry that would result.
