TENNIS AT WIMBLEDON LEAGUE TENNIS LOCAL HOCKEY
America's Chances In The
Men's Doubles
ין
London, July 4
The games on to-day's pro- gramme at Wimbledon, following 1 the excitement of the man's and women's singles, although "of a high standard. were nevertheless something of an anti-climax.
ENGLAND'S TEAMS
London, July 4.
It was officially announced to- day that England's Davis Cup team would be composed of the follow- ing players: Perry, Hughes, Austin The most interesting matches and Tuckey. The English Wight- were in the men's semi-finals, man Cup team will be: Miss where the Australian pair, Craw-Stammers, Miss Dearman, Miss ford and Quist, strongly favoured | Lyle and Mrs. King— Reuter.
for the title in some quarters, eliminated a listless French team. Boussus and Bernard. Budge and Mako, the highly-ranked American pair, disposed of Maler and Wood, and Allison and Van Ryn, another powerful American combination. advanced at the expense of the' South Africans, Bertram and Mus-
grove.
Hughes and Tuckey; who have | heen selected as two of the English Davis Cup team, defeated "Andrews and Rogers handily in their meet- ing.
The New Zealand-Ireland combination was never threatening.
Thus the competition in the
men's doubles narrows down to these four teams, America with a double-entry opportunity: Craw- ford and Quist. Australla: Budge end Mako, and Allison and Van Ryn, U.SIA: Hughes and Tückey. England:
Boussus and Bernard were no
match for the Australian pair in their engagement, Bernard was listless and indifferent and Boussus, although he tried hard throughout, had no shots to cope with the intensive net play of the Ausraliana, Crawford and Quist forced the pace always and al- ways had the upper hand.
SPECTACULAR MATCH
The Budge-Mako vs. Mater-Wood match, on the other hand, was one of the most spectacular doubles contests seen at Wimbledon in a decade. All four men played with great individual brilliancé, but Budge and Mako shone as a unit.

Budge and Mako led 7-8 in the third set, buť. Mako, who had been deadly at the net up to this time, began netting. They lost the third and fourth set, and only managed to retrieve the Afth set by dint of tremendous effort. All four were near exhaustion at the finish.
Their scores were: 6-3, 6-4, 7-9, 3-6, 6-3.
PRACTICE MATCH Hughes and Tuckey, who “will probably, be England's Davis Cup doubles pat, merely had a practice match against Andrews and Rogers. They did not give a very striking exhibition, but that was simply because they did not have to. They will have to be more
accurate to beat Allison and Van Ryn in the semi-final,
The last match of the day was the quarter-final in the mixed doubles between Perry and Miss Round and Mallroy and Miss Heeley The English pair won 7-9. 6-3, 6-1. Meanwhile. Von Gramm and Frau Sperling were beating Turnbull and Signorina Valerio, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, and Mr. and Mrs. Hopman were defeating Wilde and Miss Stammers, 2-3, 6-1, 9-7.
Miss Stammers and Miss James advanced in the quarter-finals of the women's doubles, beating Mile. Jedarejowska and Miss Noel, and Mrs. Haylock and Mrs. Kirk beat Miss Dearman and Miss Lyle."
In the women's singles, Miss Helen Jacobs and Mrs. Helen Mills- Moody went into the final. Both are Americans-Reuter.

FUTURE CONTESTS
After the reports of the Sub committees who dealt with the Interport. Colony and Civilian matches had been read, Mr. A. E. 3. Guest put forward a propost- tion that in future the committee should select 15 players instead of eleven when preparing for an In- terport. Colony or Civilian match, and that from these 15 players
selected. the team should be nominated, and the other four players would act as reserves, so that the committee would have the opportunity of leaving the nomina tion of the, actual team up to the last moment.
The proposition was put before the meeting and carried. "

YESTERDAY'S MATCH
In the quarterfinals of the open pair bowls championship between T. Armstand C. Strange and F. Eccleshall and J. Shevneri letter pair won by 28.shots to 19.
The score does not in the least gives a fair reflection of the play as the former were always ahead until the 17th head. when they were overhauled by their oppon- ents.
..:
Previous to this the, first named pair were leading by 17 shots to 14 on the 15th head by scoring three threes á five and three singles as against their opponents' couple of twos, a five and five singles. After the 15th head_the winners played up better than in the initial stages and on the very next head notched a two and a four and then they never locked back The losers scored a single on 17th and 20th heads while the winners replied with a single a fre and a four to complete the tally of 28. shots against 19
"The losers put up a very credi, "table" show, especially Strange, while Shepherd improved later in the game to roll in some beautiful
