Narking, June 17:. According to the annual trade report issued by the Chinese Mari- time' Customs the value of China's imports of cotton and cotton plece-goods has dropped from $169,000,000 for 1933 to 126,000,000 tor 1934. The decrease in imports Di cotton piece-goods mayr – be scribed to the efforts which have heen made in recent years by the National Economic Council to in- plove the cotton industry in this country.

Reporting considerable progress durlug 1934, the annual statement of the Cotton Commission of the Nations Economic

Council has

been published. The report lists the outstanding work done in 1934. und outlines plans and ub- jects for 1935,

Among these things achieved during the year 1934, the most im- portant were the inauguration of the Central Cotton Improvement Institute, the Cotton Improvement Institutes of Kiangsu, Honan and Shans,

the Cotton Cultivation Direction Bureau of Shans, and the Cotton Insect Research Bureau of Shantung. In addition to this. the Central University, the Wal- versity of Nanking, and Nantung University, have all inaugurated training classes in cotton cultiva- tton und co-operation i cotton production and consumption at the request of the Commission.

RIGID ECONOMY

The budget for 1935 is based on that of 1934, when a total of $400,- 000, was spent by the Commission. Though the work is to be extend- ed, it is thought that by rigid economy, and careful attention, the expenditure for 1935 should not exceed that of the previous year. This sum includes grants to the various Institutions through out the provinces, for education in cotton culture and for the pur- chase of seeds to the extent that the Commission is able.

It is the universal opinion in this country that the only fundamental solution to the problem of the 'un- favourable trade balance is to in- crease home production. In ac- cordance with this policy of the National Government, the Cotten Commission of the N. E. C. has done its share in the year Just passed and is planning to enlarge the scope of its activities in the direction of cotton improvement, It is hoped by an increase in the domestic output of cotton, China's import of this item will grow less and less in the future.-- China United Press (by mail).

Also in the party were Vere and Dah Harvey. John and Jacko Roves, and Mr. Keely.

Before dinner, everybody sat on the terrace. It was amusing, as each car rolled up to identify new arrivals-large cars vomited forth tiny people, small cars unloaded the most unexpectedly enormous people. Sooner or later they all found their way inside where an excellent light dinner was put up and subsequently put down. After dinner the room was cleared in a surprisingly short time and danc- ing started.
