CONFLICTING REPORTS
Regarding The Chinese
Naval Engagement.
It had been a long time since residents In Hong Kong heard the booming of guns in distant waters, but such was the experi- ence which befell many local residents when shortly after 6 pun... on Friday such echoes were heard.
The two rebel cruisers Hai un! and flat Shen after taking on sufficient con left Hong Kong narbour shortly after a pim, pre- sumbly for the North, according to instuctions received from the Nanking Government,
When about fifty miles out of the Colony and near Waglan Island these two cruisers were mat by a more modern and bigger boat the Ning Hai of the Nanking Navy and was at once subjected to a tombardment of shells. Lucky ne gunfire did not take ef- feet and the two cruisers beat a nasty retreat to Hong Kong waters.
'Later, in the course of Saturday, inore mystery was added to the already complicated situation by the additional arrival of the trainship Tung Chi and two further Northern cruisers the Hai-` chow and alyung which were anchored off Junk Bay.
Many rumours and conjectures were prevalent regarding the presence of these cruisers but up till the time of writing nothing definite was known regarding the fate of the rebel cruisers.
Several officers including Admiral Chen, Vice Minister of the Navy were interviewed and below we give the results of these. interviews.
Captain Tang Ching-hal when

The Captain's instructions were that he should go direct to Amoy and there be met by Nan- king ship but he was not told that a Nanking ship would be coming south here to escort them North.
When the Ning Hai "saw the two rebel cruisers steaming away they were under the impression that they wre trying to "give them the slip and to prevent such a occurrence she had no alternative but to open fire.
"My ship was about 10 miles north of Waglan and by look out man saw three ships, and all look-
