Ascot Colours The Spotted Effects
There is much
to be said for
the all-black tollette. It has a distinction all its own, and a re- liet may be brought in by colour- crystal and ed jewellery. Pink cors are good with black chiffon -se are chunks of Jade. Pearls never fall to appeal. Diamonds, On the other hand, are better with a background of white or paler shades,
For cinema and theatre wear, what is more effective than black lace (dull and cire) or dead black chlifon. A bright moire or can gleaming black satin sash bring in the sheen. The complete 1s and 'black evening tollette should ever be in the wardrobe of the chic woman.
The rather fussy, decorative glove, bizarre bow, fantastically large collar and exaggerated sleeve are amusing, but not really smart. The reason is, of course, that-they are apt to become too popular. Quiet, peaceful modes hare their own way of proclaim- ing the exclusive note,
Colours affected by the well- -dressed are either conspicuous kr their pale beauty, or occasionally for a marvellous colourful design that copies an exotic effect, pos- sibly a conventional pattern, or perhaps a flower-gardën,
Period-dressing can stress both the pastel and the brilliant side of colours. Taking the mode all round in its modern requirements. our up-to-date best dresser can proclaim 1835 as an age of" true elegance.
As a general rule; the season's "greatest dress display is not til
Ascot week. Jubilee festivities have largely altered this... Mag- hacence; characteristic of the year, started early. Silver, for ex- ample-even for day wear-was prominerit, and the charm of fea- thers and Bowers has already been seen +
THE COLOURS
In the matter of colours, for ex ample, April proved the craze 107
but already the brighter' 'tones in red are becoming much more subdued.
red,
Cool greens, and greys will be" seen for warmer days ahead. As a contrast to white, nothing is more refreshing than the green range. Grey is a dignified and very special combination with white. Both shades are to be tea-
tured in Ascot collections. There is a lovely model in white crepe
LANE, ORAWFORD, LTD. that has a tiny Ivy-lesi design
in two tones of, green lace (dark and light). I have seen the lace
made up in belero fashion with the pleated white crepe front, ty- ing with a matching jabot. To complete this tollette was a small Watteau shaped hat of white. straw with the crown made of green and white wings.
ROUND THE
SHOPS
LANE CRAWFORD
Lane Crawford have a very fine selection of the Gossard line of beauty designed to meet the needs of every type of figure, and for wearing on all occasions in the wonder elastic with Gossard. It is light and comfortable but never ceases to give support, and it is economical because it will outwear other elastica, which is "specially useful in 1 hot climate, "The prices are from $12.75 and $3.75 which is very reasonable.
MAIZEE'S
A clever tunic grey silky crepe woven with a white and grey spot was placed over a slim quilted grey taffeta underslip in another model. A large cape col-"ment of bats and summer trocks
'lar and the turn-back gauntlet cuffs of the three-quarter, sleeves were made of the quilted silk. The hat brim of grey had a crown of grey and white ostrich. There was also an original parasol made in the curiously woven spotted fabric."
.Gloves, shoes and were to be of grey suede.

Possibly the majority of flower- ed bats will be worn by the de- butantes in large leghorn shapes now that leghorn is in ail colours. A posy of the same flowers will be tucked into the ribbon sash in such shades that may be chosen to relieve the whiteness of plain and pin spotted organdie. The. old point d'esprit pattern is an- ther familiar favourite that 'has come into the muslin category. It is charming in colours if kept over a foundation of the same. Grey musiin is uncommon, espec- ully when worn with a big leg- hurn shape in blue, covered with muny shaded blue flowers and a Green sash or post' of the same.
auslin is good..with yellow.
New stiffened laces in small patterns of white will have skirts cut very full and touching the ground for Ascot. A fairly long slim cape is a becoming finish. particularly if the hat be on the longer side. No doubt the thrust- forward styles of brims will be "worn. The halo-hat cannot be ignored. Some of the most ori- ginal and chic halo shapes are in all black and of tülle and lace cire. with H crown of feather fronds.
THE ALL-BLACK HAT There is never any doubt as to the of the inimitable chic ail-black hat with the all-white dress.

reverse the picture strikes an exclusive ncte this season in the all-black a touch frock, with possibly of white near the neck. I mean the type of frock compos- ed of some ethereal lace-uke fab- ric. This, with a white hat with crown of all-white flowers of fea- thers, is a charming and always successful alilance.

The delightful spotted lawns and linens have a special attract tion. Like stripes, brightly 'col- oured spots a pale back- ground in linen give a cheerful touch.
Quietly smart are the strictly tailored linen or shantung suits in grey beige and white, the coat having a plain black velvet col- lar. For hot climates a striped shantung collar with a plain sile is considered a more practical proposition. The short tailored skirt may be a little full, or else kept tight and pleated hear, the hem Plain hand work in linen for the lawn blouse or waistcoat worn with the linen suit.
