Lord Riddell's Bequest

London, Jan, 18. Lord Riddell, who left £5,000 and
his books to the London Library, was a frequent visitor to 14 St. James's-square. He had served on the committee for many years, and rarely missed a meet- Ing.
Only once in the Library's his- tory of nearly a century has it been bequeathed a larger sum. This was the legacy of £18,000 left by Major W. Prevost in 1929.
Never before has the Library re- celved so many books in a single bequest. They number about 6,000. Sir Hagberg Wright said that he was surprised as anyone at Lord „Fiddell's generosity to the Library. "He used chattingly to call me an inveterate beggar." he said, "Lord Riddell liked giving, but he did not like being asked to give. I never asked him for anything."
