RICKSHA MEN CABLE NEWS IN BRIEF
To Have Better Treatment
(Special Air Mall Service)
London, Oct. 13. three cities of the East, Singapore, Canton, and Simla, efforts are being made to improve the lot of the ricksha puller. They are treated badly by many, or those who still use the ricksha get angry with the puller for his lack of Intelligence, and those who use the roads as motorists curse.. hm for his lack of traffe sense.
Canton municipality has started a slogan campaign to improve the conditions of the ricksha men- During the heat wave do not tommand your ricksha puller to run fast, is one poster, and the ricksha companies are being forced to provide the pullers with rain coats and hats, and a percentage of the rieksha tax is being set #side for the construction hostels for the men,

In Simla an enquiry has been held into the conditions under which the rickaha coolles work. Their monthly earnings, it showed, are between Rs. 15 and Rs. 22 during the season, and out of that they have to pay living expenses and put by what they can to keep themselves and their families alive
during the rest of the year. The working life of the average ricksha ruller In Simla is less than ten years,
It is a pity that these efforts to improve the conditions under which ricksha coolies live and work were not made before. His usefulness is passing, and some say that there is no room for rickshas among the speedy motor-driven traffle of to-. day.
Yet when the ricksha is no more It will be missed. The pullers are an uncouth and uneducated lot, who speak no known language, but
