Increased Tophage Into Sydney

During the twelve months ended June 30, 1934, 612 steam vessels 356 oil burners, 288 motorships and three sailing vessels entered the port of Sydney from overseas, states a report issued by the Sydney Harbour Trust. Interstate totals were: steam 870, oil 107. motor 97, and sall nii; and for interstate 4078 steam vessels and 87 motorships. The total number of vessels was 6498, with a net tonnage of 9,432,777 tons and 16- 354,219 gross tons. As compared with the previous year, oversea steamers show a decrease of 65, motor vessels an increase of 24 and sailing vessels a decrease of 2. In- terstate steamers increased 34 motor vessels 2. The aggregate tonnage shows an increase of 72 881 tons" net and an increase of 50,541 tons gross for the 1934 period when compared with the

previous term.

British Tonnage for Finland

As a result of an agreement hay- ing been reached between Finland and Britain regarding the claim for 120,000,000 Finnish marks in respect of the employment of Finnish vessels during the war, it is reported that negotiations are proceeding with a view to placing orders for vessels of this value with British yards. The Finnish claim for compensation applied to the period after Britain's recogni tion of Finnish independence, and discussions regarding the matter have been proceeding for many years.
