Canton Aug. 16. While the real state of affairs iri Foochow is not fully known cwing to press censorship, Fuklen- ese merchants here received tele- grams yesterday afternoon stating that the Nanking troops were fighting the Communists on Tues day night at Yen Ping and Ku Tien, which are about 80 miles and 60 miles respectively North-west of Foochow.

These two towns are the strate glogateways to Foochow and in the past the fall of these points meant the inevitable occupation of Foochow. But the heavy cancer- tration of troops in the provincial capital may prevent it from being taken by the Communists.

More divisions are being sent from Cheklang and Kiansu to Fu kien by land and water. Treaty ports as Foochow and Amoy may remain in the hands of tbe gov- erument troops owing to the pre- sence of Chinese and foreign war- ships, although the danger always remains, it is belleved here.
