WHAT SPONGE AND WATER CAN DO

(Special Air Mall Service)

So much white is being worn this season, white rainproofs, hats and shoes, and in fashion accep- sories, vanity bags, sunshades. and belts, that the delicate ques- tion arises. in the mind of the well dressed

Modern fashion designers and manufacturers have. however, given their productions a prac- tical note. Many of the decora- tive dress accessories, in white or the fashionable pale colourings, which are .now appealing ...to women by reason of their summery daintiness of finish, are usually washable, or, simpler pro- cess still, spongeable.

"This applies to the latest lea- ther handbags in white washable hildes. There are bags with a canvas surface in white which are both washable and water- proof. These have the fist enve-, lope fastening with plain navy. buttons in chromium or glit, and cunning little stiff plaited strap handles in colour.

Sunshades and rainproots are

made in a variety of easily clean- sed fabrics. There are the slik allskins in summer tints, and the heavier crepe de Chines in white and cream and in pale colours are also treated in a process that. gives a waterproof surface. washing should be done gently with a sponge and water:

There are special creams – for cleaning white leather wear, which are useful for the highly finished patent which makes many of the plaited and cord white waist belts. Chromium in belts and buckles can be polished like a mirror, with plain water and a little piece of soft chamols leather.

This is a useful. tip for vanity bag fittings and fastenings, and also the large buttons, and 'other trides in the way of glass bead. necklaces and bracelets in which 'this metal is used for settings.

Beach bags and cushions in the gayest of cretonnes, both water- proof and washable, will appeal to many women, since a sponge over will bring" back all the in- itial freshness and beauty of co- lourings.

There are many new curtala materials, oilskin silks and cot- tons in a series of excellent co- lours, which will aid in the labour-saving ideal of the holiday. bungalow, and at the same time bestow distinction on the furnis- hing colour scheme. !

Even shoes have been brought into the category of accessories that can be washed, thereby ob- viating the necessity of taking away too many kinds or shoe- cleaning apparatus on holiday. Washable shoes for children are particularly practical. They are to be found at the West-end stores in calf, one of the newest designs being in brown and white, and toeless..

RIBBON "HATS

Some houses are sponsor- Ing country hats made from the new printed cretonne ribbons, and often these rather'stin, floral-patterned ribbons are used as sashes, or inset in qummer frocks of cotton fabric. Gay Romper Sults for Beach Wear

In all kinds of beach wear, such as the attractive new rom- per suits, or shorts, or the new button-on

sun-back skirts and jumpers, the general trend is to- wards the practical. Linen is the favourite material, and that 1s essentially hard wearing. The beach pyjamas have given way to smart man-tailored shorts.

Cotton Frocks for the Ballroom

Schiaparelli has introduced many new and unusual materials into the dress world, and con- siders that cotton frocks should once more be given a chance" in the London ballroom: In one cat- ton ensemble for a summer even- ing the material is blue and "white checked cotton crepon, and to make the frock stand out a little round the feet a frill of white jaconet (a starched cotton fabric) is introduced under the hem.

Brace-like straps. twisted in front, hold up the frock, which is fastened at one side with a white enemel hook. The little frill-crim- med cape is of sheened white or- gandle. The only piece of stik in. the whole outfit is in the ribbon. It is used for the knotted bow at the back. This is of bright blue velvet Crystal mercury wings are used for the fastening in front. One Ascot suggestion in cotton is a plain straight ankle- length frock of pale blue cotton crepe volle with a delicate scroll This has a black. pattern in slightly cowl front and is tied at the back of the neck with inch- wide black cotton braid. Similar braid, but wider is used for a waistband. A poke bonnet-hat made from shiny black string with a black muslin bow for trim- ming, would be an appropriate companion for this frock.

The Season's New Line, The new small capés, or bolero and cafe combined tend to give a distinctive and broader iine to shoulders. Some of the fuller and frilly summery skirts have the draped fichu bodices, and sash-waists, which take away any suggestion of a superfuitý of fabric. Much attenton is paid, to the neck drapery. The three- quarter sleeve that opens wide towards the wrist is pleasing, and balances. a slighty flared hemline. Waists are placed fairly normal- ly. Often a slight break at the waistline is helpful, especially H a tiriy bolero cape is worn, for at last the summer cape' has an important place in fashion. Some little capes

attached to sashes and fasten at the back, with the ends falling on to the skirt. A somewhat difficult mode is the Introduction of contrasting sleeves. With the modern desire for simplicity the quieter con- trasts in colour prevail. Spotted fabrics are used sparingly for

New Summer Stocking shades that

suggest bare ankle effects Despite the bare legged vogue. stockings are as important as ever. "Nude" silk hosiery is the latest. Of the sheerest silk. flesh- coloured and as fine as gauze. they are designed to meet the summer fashion of bare ankles. For everyday wear stockings of the finest mesh in silk are seen mainly in three shades. Light. medium and darker. The lightest are the nude effects ranging be- tween pearly-pinks and bronzes. When it comes to hos- lery to wear with the walking sult, the vogue for blue or brown has brought with it a liking for beige-coloured stockings, with a blue suit particularly when brown shoes are worn. For the black or black and, white ensamble worn by the older woman there are lovely pale greys, cool in tone. yet possessing becoming pear- liness in tint. Sun-tan bronzes are worn with light frocks by the sports girl, and these shades are also useful for summer linen tweed costumes. With the more important darker-toned frocks in silk or printed fabrics stock- ings in a lighter tone are chosen, in keeping with the colour of the

and cream sporta socklets are made in silk with decorative turnover tops embroidered in gay colours. These socklets are of the transparent type in fine silk or an open mesh with practical soles of Hale thread or wool. Other attractive designs in socklets are seen in pale pastel colours topped with a design in white.

Field Flowers

Field flowers are immensely popular as a design for printed materials. A lovely dress for a not so young wearer is of black chiffon printed with poppies and cornflowers, with an apron panel

In front edged with fine black lace. Alternatively there is red and white chiffon dress with a black scroll pattern mounted on bright red taffeta. with a long sleeved coat of the dress material. A brown taffeta faille coat serves as an attractive din- ner or theatre dress.

Immensely big necklaces of round beads are sponsored by Worth with his later spring en- sembles. Toey look terribly hea- vy, but turn out to be made from the lightest woods-a pleasing change from some of the weighty jewellery women have worn late- ly.

This house also shows little collarettes of what appears to be cat-gut, several strands making a collar tolle flat upon a plain dress, and the ends are tied in

a neat bow in front.

RINGS AND EAR-RINGS

Angular lines are apparent in

The stones for the newest decorative rings are also cut in angular shapes and may be in triangles or squares, with broad fat facings.
