much measuring and mixing may spoil the cake. For every additional process is just one more risk-one more cook whose fingers may queer "things. LADIES SALON,

London. May 31.
I have been watching the in- creasing vogue · far the white, jacket. In crepe, pique and taffeta, it is one of the smartest notes of the season.
ex-
Frenchwomen and other clusive dressers wear their white coats, hats and gloves with dark dresses. For Ascot we shall see transparent white organdle coats worn over the daintiest oral crepes.
These will be accompanied by wide brimmed hats of black or white straw-very shallow. Low." crowned hats are charming on yourig girls, but are not comfort- able in a high wind....
Like the smart "three-piece," older women have returned to1 the three cornered hat and some novel styles in turbans. The enormous hats, with fine elastic to hold them, are not for the average woman. For 'real June days, however, the transparent double-brimmed hats of black crín, net or tulle, dull and shin- ing, with flowers or feathers, can be very charming. Lightness is easier to pin on securely, and is always becoming when worn with frilly frocks.
All-white toilettes will be seen at Ascot, worn with the trans- parent hat and cape and coatee in black, thus reversing. the im- mediate order of things. "Yet the most subtle dressers will prefer the newer way and have the out- side white garments and the frocks dark. Fashion has largely managed to return to black-and- white and so good style is assured. This alliance may not sound ex- citing for summertime, but there are always plenty of gay-coloured cottons and woollies for life in the country.
Delightful sports specialities are in every wardrobe; and one has come to regard darker town clot- bes as
good synonymous with taste quiet and restrained, · yet. given the lightest relief by the variety of Almy organdies and gauzea, cotton flowers and trim- mings.
When warm days are sunless there is the new and more sub- stantial coat of white crinkled crepe, traffeta, or pique.
Popular though white is, no modern summer would be com-
plete without the useful printed ensembles. There is a charming variety in cool crepe, in white grounds with a tiny floral or › spotted" "design in black, green, ör blue to be worn with a dark coat, white cambric gloves, and jabot:
Some very novel and striking black and white ensembles," are in crepe the new crinkle Ind- the coat and frock all of the same. They, can be worn with white accessories or any trans=" parent black. Others in chic printed designs will have a white
ground and a white raised design all in organdie. Sometimes & taffeta cape. sash, and hat are added this is rather an expen- sive form of "dressing sultable for Ascot and suchlike occasions.
"
Collars Like Capes
The white vogue will be stressea in many ways. Enormous collars will, for the girls, take the place of capes. In fact, many of the new collars are almost the same as capes, being arranged in three distinctive tiefs with scalloped edges. Others are made double and stiff, almost like a ruche. These distinctive collars are in a measure a protect to the entirely collarless coats, which can be well worn with dresses that have fanciful collars which are pulled outside; in fact, treated. in the. same way as the Janot.
It appears that more than ever all forms of cleyer, dressing de- pend largely on the accessories, which are very elaborate in con- trast to great simplicity of cul.
Certain hats for Ascot, seem exaggerated in their simplicity. Being fine examples” “of intricate handwork and stitchery, they are far from cheap, despite their simple air! Hat styles can all be changed in a few days, so before the great June festival actually arrives bonnets will very likely be the cry and with them the small Victorian parasols can have their day once more!
One hears of these things, but?- parasols are difficult to carry with handbags, race card, and glasses. Although to many girls and wo- men Ascot is the great opportu- nity for dress display, there is also well-dressed racing woman to whom an elaborate parasol would be a tiresome handicap. Her shady brimmed hat generally makes appeal for the paddock.
Organdie Cire Suits
1: There
are many attractive tailored ensembles destined spe- clally for this season. Organdie-. cire in all-black cr all-white can make up into, a charming zemi- masculine little sult, worn with light hat, Jabot, gloves, and natu- ral flowers arranged as a spray on
severe rever of the coat.
Some grey sik taffeta sults show a shorter "swagger" coat with a
pleated skirt. White china buttons emphasise other white accessories. There is somė- thing chic about these fine gume mery fabrics, perfected un- der the taflors iron, and re- Lieved by the most feminine de- talls to give the required note of frivolity and lightness. 27
This season youth can be as flamboyant and picturesque" as it pleases, but the very chic dres zer will probably try for a more individual appearance.
- LANE, CRAWFORD'S
There is nothing like a smart. and saucy hat, set one of these on your head at" a jaunty angle and notice the perky appearance that it makes You feel too the light- ness of the material, the cool com-" fortable weight. These are exactly what Lane, Crawford's are show=" Ing this week. The newest they have in are a few in Alpata some with the large brims and others in The "Halo" style. Then there are some very smart light weight, feits in white.
