The Crisp Note Of Spring
Crisp Styles promise to be in favour this spring. To begin with, there are quite a lot of crisp ma- terials in use-taffetas and organ- sa, or, as it was first called, or- gandi, of the silk kind, which is just crisp enough never to look" draggled. Then there are the lames and the ordinary muslins or grenadines,
There is something about many of the new materials and styles which recalls the fashions of Bath in its Jane Austen days, "There are striped muslins, flowered silks, ribbon sashes, and some turbu- lencé about the petticoats to go. with them."
The chief difference in fashion which lies between then and now is that women now dress fittingly for what they are doing, where- as it must be admitted that Kat- herine Morland, Elizabeth Bennet, and the rest of the bevy of fair girls did not dress with any idea of being practleal,
To-day we have clothes for every occupation, and the right ones. "Only when we are going to party do we become utterly un- practical Our evening dresses are as absurd as they should be; our late afternoon frocks are ex- tremely feminine; but for walking, games, shopping, and travelling. we have ideal clothes which re- main tidy in a storm, after a night in the train, or a long drive. in the car.
Cottons
A great deal of cotton is going to be used this spring, and all sorts of the mixtures that the American fashion wilters call synthetic yarns.
I went to see the Le Bur collse-' tion the other day, and found soute of the most enchanting ma- terials, plain and figured, in wool and in mixed yarns and in cotton of different kinds. The loosely woven materials are most popu- lar; a fine canvas weave in soft woollen crepe is charming.
The rich shades, which are rïelt- her pastel nor full cur; the soft faded shades, the stripes, checks.. spots, tartans are all pleasing to, look at and to touch, The great idea is to have two or three shades' of one colour with a figured ma- terial in several colours-striped, checked, or in a tartan- and then make up an ensemble of coat. skirt, and blouse, or else a dress and coat
Leading Note
This blending of colours and shades of one colour in one en- semble is the leading note Di spring fashions up to the present.
Another fashion, which is nức able is that of different weights of material in an ensemble. A thin dress has a thicker coat, Fre quently, the cost is in a figured material and the dress in's plain one.
Dress. materials of all kinds, wool, silk, cotton, as well as mix-, tures of different yarns, are now made in families, and that has a marked fuence on styles. Or course, there are plain coloured
materials, crinkled crepes, and so on. but the new fashion is to have different shades of one colour, and as many a5 can be pleasantly mixed in one enserable.
Rings And Fingers

The
Having removed from Gloucester Arcade. Eve tras her new shop in China. Bulidings, its just opposite to the Hong Kong Hotel. She will be unpacking' on Monday the latest from Paris in the way to Cocktail hats, nothing Uke it has been seen la Hong #Kong before, so go in early and
make your choice.
A sage of the second. century wrote that men ought not to wear rings on the top. joints of their fingers, because that fashion was only fit for women! The right place for a ring on a man's hand was, he said, the little finger, and he advised men to slip the rings down as far as they would go, and warned them with regard to the engravings on the signets. A right and proper engraving for a man was a fish; a musical "instrument..
ship in sall running before the wind. Swords, arrows, ideals, and drinkling-cups he condemned for their evil influence on the minds of men, and he became fanatic over the fashion of having the "igure of a woman engraved" on a ring. This he considered likely to wreck, men's lives by con- .. stantly reminding them of the doubtful joys of love!
or
Such exhortations prove what an important place the ring hela in the past when, as a seal, it did he work of a lawyer; as a pledge. that of a pawnbroker. The metal of which it was made indicated the social rank of the wearer among the Romans; and in Chur- ch and State it symbolized the different grades of authority. .
THE WEDDING RING There are traditions about "the fingers on which rings are WOT Macrobus, a:Greek grammarian, who seems to have meddled with a number of subjects having no relation to grammar, has some"
These little hats are just the thing to wear in the evening and its the last word In smartness. They are made in nets and rib- bans with transparent crowns and atla net brima.

from the waist, or it can be left off altogether. Then their wash- ing stik sülts, just too smart for words and at bargain prices "too. Some of them are in two shades of material especially the white with the three quarter length roats are what was admired.
Lane Crawfords, Lane Crawfords are still having thel: sale of American dresses, every day there are new styles to be seen. The evening dresses bave been reduced "to $25.50 and $35.50 and there are some very pretty ones to be bad at those prices. Ode that was rather at- tractive was made of pink silk taffeta and had the circular puff sleeves, and another in a light brown trimmed with dark brown ribbon it had the square cut neck, Then there were quite a number of net in very delicate shades, and should be the thing to wear during the warm evenings.
Miss Naylor,
Miss Naylor is expecting-to-day a big consignment of evening and afternoon dresses. Her tailored silk suits are very smart as also are her evening and afternoon frocks, and no two dresses alike. Mayos.

finger are only half protected and therefore unsuitable for guarding the rharriage symbol; the middle finger is far too insolent, reproa- chful, and gross; so nothing is left for the wedding ring but the third finger. He did not start the cus- tom of wearing the wedding ring on the third finger.-nobody seems to know who is responsible for that--but he certainly took pains to discover the reason!
· CHARACTER AND THE RING
A ring worn on the forefinger is supposed to indicate a haughty, bold spirit, a little overbearing. On the middle finger, it means dig- ...nity, prudencë, and discretion. On the marriage, finger, ft. betokens love and affection. On the little finger, it indicates a masterful spirit, perhaps that is why Cie- mens" Alexandrinus advised men to wear theirs on that Anger!-
It has also been said that "n ring worn on the first finger by a man or woman indicates that the wearer is ready to marry, or even to indulge in a little plea- sant philandering. A ring worn on the little finger is a signal that the wearer is utterly irreproach- able where affairs of the heart
tempted.
