MOTORING AND

The 20-H.P. Rover Tourer
By "John"
It was not much because it climbed a steep and tong hill Easter than any car I have yet tried that I was so interestell in the new 30- 1. Rover, nor because" it poceler ated and went very fast on third and top, or because it has a guar- anteed speed of eighty-five miles. un hour and has achieved a good deal gore, but because it combines all, these highly agreeable boom- the plishments with nearly all inost desirable qualities of an.or- dinarily tame touring pur.
Eighty-five miles an hour from an engine of only two and a half litres capacity, and £20 tax, is a notable figure. There are, in fact, very low cars of any, power that will reach it in ordinary circum- stances. The bore and stroke are 7 by 103; the valves are overhead, operated by push-rods; cooling is by putap and fan, with thermosta tically controlled radiator shut- bes: ignition is by Scintilla mag- deto all except the last-named (in these days) the normal features of a touring engine.
EXCELLENT DESIGN
The only leas usual feature is the provision of three duwa draught So far, as I 'could carburettors.

gine
the
either
compressionis hormal or only slightly raised. Ordinary petrol was used and there was no sign of pinking other than that caused by a deliberately over- advanced firing-point. The top speed ratio is very high, at 3.7 to 1, and one must therefore concinde that the car's performance is due solely to the excellent" design and of an apparently workmanship quite normal engine. This is rare enough at any price, but at £495, with either an open touring body or a very close-coupled coupe, it. deserves special comment.
Other details of this attractive car are a wheelbise of 9 ft. 3 in., a clearance of 7 in, a Ferodo disc clutch that is particularly light and smooth in action, a silent third speed, vacuum-sarvo brakes, duplex Hartford shock-absorbers. and Budge-Whitworth "knock-off" wire wheels. The tools are carried on the dash, and on the coupe there. is about the largest luggage recep- tacle I have ever seen.
Direction indicators of the usual type are fitted flush in the rear panel, behind the very wide single door. I should prefer to see them nt the corner's of the hout, where they would come im- mediately under the eye of the fol-. lowing driver, but, us it is they are further aft than is usual, The controlling switch should be on the wheel and nut on the dash, where it is not handy enough. One" should be able to signal without taking hands from the wheel
BODYWORK Z
The coupe, which is known as the Hastings model owing to the premier award it received at the recent Rally, has two very cor- fortable front seate, wide and deep, with correctly angled backs. From these the outlook is excellent on all sides!

too
The back seat with foot-welle, close to the front except for children and lug- gage. That is the only point in which the car resembles the accept- od form of "sports" car
On the road the car's manners aro charming. The Marles steer- ing is exactly right, light, and steady, with plenty of caster nc- tion. This, with the firm suspen- sion, gives fast and safe cornering. The brakes are very powerful and swift in action. Gear-changing in quick and easy, particularly be tween top and third
The drive of the car la more of a pull than a drive. The sensation, from twenty miles an hour on- warda, is that of being drawn by elastic at a speed which you al- ways under-rate. My standard stretch of Westerlam, Hill, from the cross-roads, starting on the one in twelve section from a stand- still, was climbed in fifty-three seconds, the best time yet. What: impressed me much more than this was the fact that the "speel rose steadily and quickly the whole way to forty-two miles an hour. Here the Rover ties with a 30 h.p. eight-cyliner car weigling a quar- ter of a ton less. The latter was not timed, however, eo I cannot judge of the relative value of the two perforinances.
This is one of the best real tour ing car, I have ever driven.

Questions And Answers
STEERING ADJUSTMENT
Question,
1 own a 9.30 h.p. Humber and would be grateful for any advice on taking up certain steering wear. The car has done a very consider- able muleage but, au informed, bas received little or no attention. in this direction."
Shrewsbury, Answer.
JW.C.
Three key-ways are provided in the steering swing lever which nilow the whole circumference of the worm wheel to be used by set- ting the key in the next. kop-way when the wear takes place,
Frequent attention must be given to lubrication. The steering gear- box should be filled with thick oil or a mixture of grease and oil, inserted by removing the plug
placed at the top of the box The two ball joints on the side steering shaft, furthermore, should be re- plenished
with grease roughly
every 300 mile.

BOXING
ARREST
DAY
While Children Were Dying
Critician of thuse responsible for the arrest of Sydney Alfred Baker, the ford man whose two infaut children, Batty (4) und Bernard (2), wors taken ili and died while their father was in Brixton prison. for non-payment of rates, was made by the East Han coroner, Dr. P. B. Skeels.
Baker was arrested on Doxing Day on a warrant issued on Nov.
21.
"However urgent may be the re- ! quest for the payment of rates, it' is difficult for me to believe that} Boxing Day was an appropriate day on which to execute suo a war- rant," said the coroner.
HA Httle consideration, a little thought and an inquiry here and there would have softened the hearts to postpone the execution of the
warrant,
1
"In view of the condition of Mrs. Baker-she was likely to go to bed at any time--and the pending death of the children, 1 think it was a spity that the process was put into
force on that day.

IGNITION TIMING
Question.
I have a 1930 Humber Saips and, preferring to do the lesser diffenit maintenance work myself, should be glad if you could advise me of the correct ignition timlug. Incidentally, have mislaid my instruction book. Is it possible to obtain another for this model {"
J.R.G. Bury St. Edmunds."
Answer.
Before atempting to time the ignition slacken the clamping bolt which secures the ignition control "fever to the distributor body, then
proceed as follows:
-t
Turn the flywheel until the mark representing Top Dead Centro (on No. 1 cylinder) is at top dead cen- tre and both valves on No. 1 cylin- der are closed...
Remove the contact breaker cover from the distributor and turn the distributor until the points of the contact breaker are just separating with the arm over No. 1 segment, and ignition control lever in the full retard position. "
Tighten up the scouring bolt, making sure that the distributor has not moved,
There is not the least doubt that an instruction book for the 1930 Snipe" can be obtained by making application to Humber, Ltd, of... Coventry.
SHORT CIRCUITING
Question
When dismantling certain parts end, I witnessed a series of smali of my. Wizard (1932) last week-
electrical cashes at points' where I cannot understand their, presen- ce. What is more, I discover now that the battery is simost run down. Can this be explained tor prevent its recurrence when my battery (now at the local service station for re-charging) is réturn- 'ed ""
N.J.
Bristol: "Answer.
What has happened is this: with the 1932 Wizard, the electrical equipment is of 12-volt 2 unit earth return for one wire) system, a return through the metal parts of the Chassis. If any components which form part of the circuit are disconnected" without first having removed one of the battery termin- als (in order that the circuit may be broken at its proper place) very serious "shorts" are permitted, and if left in such a "short" posi tion will, of course, very quickly run the battery batirely down, So long as one remembers, however, to break the circuit at the battery terminal no trouble of this kind need be experienced.

The two children, died at the East Han Memorial Hospital on Sunday, after a meal of fish and chip pota- toes. When the Governor of Brix- ton Prisop" was informed of the children's illness, he freed the father, himself paying the £3 rate debt for which the man was imprisoned," Baker raced across London to the hospital, but both children had died before he reached their bedside.
HUNGER LEAVES NO CHOICE
Giving evidence at the inquest Baker told the coroner he bought some fish and chips from Samuels, of Ilford-lane, Ilford, on. Dec, 22.
The fish was not very warm," he added "It seemed rather red and not quite done, but we had no dinner, and, being hungry, I took
no notice."
