BUICK 1934 ANNOUNCE-

X

MENT

Marking the 30th year of Buick's progress in fine car building, the 1904 lines once again present en- tirely new and still mire desirable features.

Nineteeti imlividual models with sleek stream lines in bodies and fenders and with every luxury and convenience found in custom-built, motor cars, made up the current offerings There are three series-- differentiated by length of wheel- base and engine power... Inside and out and from every mechanicnl standpoint, overy ear in the lines has identical qualities of unusually handsome appearance, and on- gluering advances that include revolutionary developments of rid- ing ease, operatiur, and control.

Riding comfort has been given new standards by the 1934 Buick, and these are attained by the pioneer work dine in America by Buick

nature that it will have Lise effect {{ render- ing obsolete the conventionally sprung car The entire chassis bus been redesigned clude this and other novel féntures contributing to a gliding ride. Pitching and sile sway of the car as a whole are eliminated and the back seat ride is as comfortable us that in the front seat, which in itself has riding qualities that are almost incredibly smooth, More nearly equal, distribution of weight between the front and the rear of the car promits the frynt and the rear system of springing to assume approximately an equal amount of spring duty, resulting in an even. gliding motion of the car as a whole.

Each front wheel is independent- ly carried on au individual, fric- tionilos euil spring which forms a part of Buick-Bail; individual suspension, with all that signites in sturdy, dependable construe- tion. The conventional Iront axle and stiff leaf springs are absent, the former being replaced by a special front cross-member, the latter by the coil springs and the "V"shaped arms that are carried above and below them and from which the wheels are suspended. ench as a unit in meeting and cushioning any possible road shock. Air cushion tires, completely new in design and carrying low air pressures, contribute their full share to the glide qualities of the" ride and the case and safety with which the car is handled. More- ever, they are absolutely noiselesa in, travel.

Second only in importance to the features contributing to # literally perfect riding quality are the power brakes. These include Vacun Serve mechanism, which not only provides abundant brak- ing pressure but new smoothness and measured control,

Clutches on the new models are remarkably smooth and function with the lightest pressure on the

clutch pedal, adding greatly to the ease of car control. The new Synchro-Mesh transmissions have been improved by the adoption of helical gears, silent. in all speeda-- first, send and roverse. Gear

better be done, as the only way home meant driving over the beast!

For many years Buick cars have continued to use the famous Buick valve-in-kérd, engine, and the 1924- Straight Eights are all' powered with this type. Power output has en increased in all three series. Horsepower in the 60 Serles has the 60 been increased to 88, in Series to 100 and in the Series 90 Jo 16. This has been accompli shed by increasing the cylinder here in the Series 30 and 60 and in the Series 90. by raising the compression ratio. All Buick en- gines are mounted rabber at ve points-two at the front, two at the flywheel housing and one at the rear at the transmission. The driver of a Buick is never con- scious of the engine; regardless of the driving speed.

15

A feature of unusual value in the 1934 lines is the dual controlled autimate starting mechanism. When the ignition is turned on and the accelerator peďul pushed down or the handle throttle con trol pulled down, all of the ncces- sary operations for quick, easy and certain starting are autom- atically performed, either in cold or hot weather. It is impossible. to me the starter to move the car with ignition locked and thus

down the battery. It equally impossible, for the starting gear to re-engage under any conditions while the engine is running, since there are three separate and individual means of preventing this. Automatic choke control, bold idle control and automatic heat control are ad- ditional features connected with the certainty of starting the engine and the continuance of its func- tioning under the most favorable and gconomical conditions.

Generator capacity is ample for all demands that may be made on it including operation of radio, for the installation of which all Buick

are prepared. The maximum charging rate of the generator is such that the battery

Fisher No Draft Ventilation is In standard of all Buick cara. the 1934 lines a new and improved type is available. There are de- flectors over the tips of the front ventilators which prevent the en- trance of draft, rain or snow when When the ventilators are open, ulose, the ventilators seat snugly against a strip of live rubber which is waterproof and draft- proof. Overhang of the door hinges has been reduced, eliminat- ing wind noises, and adding still another factor to the quiet with which the car travels.

Safety has been added to night driving in the Buick by an in-

I was for going to a village about a mile back and borrowing a gun, but "my friend thought diferently, and he got out of the car and started to bombard the python with sticks and stones; this, however, had no effect bé- yond causing a few "twitches."

We had noticed that the snake seemed to be a bit "swollen" in parts, and my friend then said "He is gorged and quite harmless, I am going to bash him on the head with the tyre pump." He got the pump out and advanced. to the attack, whilst, I stood my ground and watched the proceed- ings with some interest.

The Snake Unperturbed' The head lamps threw. a good "beam of light, and in this I saw my friend tip-toe up to the py- thon's head, which lay in the long grass at the side of the road, raise the pump, and bring it down with a crash. He must. however, have hit a rock, as the snake merely raised his head in a Janguld sort of way. The wretched pump flew to pieces! My friend turned and bolted back to the car as hard as he could go...

We then decided to chance it and drive over the snake. The question was whether to go over him at a fast speed of dead slowly. We finally decided on an easy speed in low gear so as To be ready for a bit of snappy acceleration if such was neces- sáry, and started off. About ten yards from the "obstacle" accelerated and we crossed over with a bump at about 15 m.p.h. Then the python did move!

Having reached my bungalow about a couple of miles farther on, we got a twelve-bore gun and eartridges and drove back. We found the python lying in "the ditch at the side of the road, und fired at his head at a range of-about' fve feet. THE CAR'S ENGINE

A

Simple Explanation Of

The Carburetter

How is that mixture of petrol and air," commonly known as 825, prepared and carried into the com- bustion chambers? That is a ques- tion which most people can answer in some sort of way, but one which, very few people can discuss with any real degree of authority.

Carburation is still very much as It was many years ago, and even

designers are puzzled to explain why two appar- ently similar engines respond quite differently to carburetter settings which are exactly alike."

All of which goes to prove that

The commonest means employed to keep up the temperature is either by the use of hos water inc- keting of the the inlet pipe or by causing the mixture to impine on a part of the pipe in contact with the exhaust "pipe.

Both systems, have good points. The hot water method does not be- come effective until the water in

the radiator has become heated, while the first firing stroke of the

Troublesome Petrol Pipes

The pipe connecting the tank to the carburetter used to break fre quently in the old days, but frac-

12

The Theory "Pat Simply

If you place a teaspoon full up to the brim with tea to your ps and rapidly inhale through almost closed lips, the tea will be drawn into the mouth in the form of a fine spray. That is exactly what the carburetter does. The descend- ing piston sucks air rapidly past a jet filled with petrol, and in passing the jet the air sucks out petrol. which then mixes with the air, the mixture being drawn into the cy- Ender via the induction pipe.

The great induction velocity the more air is sucked in, and as the vacuum round the top of the jet is therefore increased the petrol flows in greater quantities.

It is well to point out here that the amount of petrol given off at. the jet is not always proportionate to the air flow, and that unleas ar- rangements are made to correct the miicture it would not be suitable for the engine.

Hence the many devices in the form of addad jets, afz values, con- trolling valves, and so on, all de- vised to correct the mixture. But the principle is the same in nearly all carburetters.

The Float Chamber

The float chamber is a sort of small tank fed from the malir sup-- ply tank. Inside it is a float made of light gauge metal, and when the petrol within the chamber reaches the correct level (the top of the Jet) the float operates a needle, the point of which shuts off the flow. Immediately the engine draws pet- Tol from the jet the level, falls, the needle rises, and more petrol is ad- mitted to the chamber.

The petrol flows from the float chamber to the jet via a narrow passage, and ́ ́underneath the jet a trap is usually provided to rece- ive such particles of grit as may have escaped the primary filter at the entrance to the float chamber.

The jet projects into the air passage at a point where the din- meier is restricted. This restric- tion is known as the choke tube. (it may be removed easily), and its function is to increase the velocity of the air entering the instrument. It will be obvious that the sizes of the jet and choke tube will detɛT- mine the richness of the mixture entering the engine.

The Pliot Jet

The opening and closing of the throttle, which is connected to the accelerator pedal. controls

the power and speed the engine, and if the effect of opening and closing la grasped properly, it will readily be, understood why sudden move- ments of the control result in ex- cessive petrol consumption. --

It will also be obvious that with the throttle almost closed,"the suc- tion on the main jet would be in- sufficient to draw the correct amount of fuel from it, with the result that the engine would not run slowly.

To overcome this a pilot jet is provided, and led into the air pass- age Just on the engine side of the throttle, so that when the throttle" is closed and the suction on the main jet at a minimum..it is high on the pilot jet channel..

As the throttle opens the auction jet and increases on the main jet, and in this way' the jets merge into each other...

What is a Hot Spot?

Patrol absorbs heat from the at- mosphere when vaporising, and un- less provision is made to "prevent an excessively low temperature the particles would not remain in

raises the temperature, of the car- buretter. On the other hand, the water retains its heat longer than the exhaust pipe after the engine has stopped running.

Hints and Tips.

Irregular running of the engine" may be due to several things, but one of the commonest causes is B faulty joint between the carburet. ter flange and the inlet pipe.

A thin washer is usually placed between the faces, and if this has been damaged it should be replac- ed. Good quality brown paper, coated with gold size, of the use of a metallic jointing compound, will effect a cure.

To make a paper washer place a piece of paper on the carburetter

fange, and tap gently with a small hammer all round the face, so as to obtain an impresalon of the, ou- ter and inner Ines. Cut out with a knife or scissors, and the washer is complete.

The amount of sand and parti- cles of other-matter which can find

their way into the petrol supply system is astonishing, and for that reason it is desirable to clean the ganz Alters at freqüens intervals.
