TRAINING
GALLOPS
FAST TIMES SEEN LAST SATURDAY: AUSTRALIAN
"PONIES WARMING UP
(BY MORNING DEW ").
There were several fast gallops at the course on Saturday when a number of people lined the rails to watch the ponies at work. With the exception of D. S. Li, who with S. W. Pan and S. Y. Sung arrived on Friday, there were no Shanghai jockeys on the course and a good number of local jockeys were also absent, having gone to Canton, Prima Donna did a very neat mile and a quarter in 2.48.1 seconds, finishing strongly.
Tummel and Ribble went over the full Derby distance but although the first mile was quite impressive, the finish was far from good. Zero, Oak Bay, Soldier of China were among the griffins which finished well.
In the subscription griffins class, Bran Tub did a mile in 2.16.3, hut the finish was alow. Copper Idol also retur ned this time, but the finish was far from good.
King Willow, Young Hero, and In Good Time went very well while Chesterfield went over six furlongs in 1.39.4, which, comparatively speaking, is very good indeed.
D. S. Li tried out Able Amazon and the pony came home in a mile gallop, in 2.01, running freely. Dinty made a welcome re-appearance in the course and his three- quarter mile of 1.32.2 was very fast, since the last quarter was only 27.2 and the last half 57.2
