"SO THIS IS AFRICA"

Coming to Alhambra

That dark and mysterious con- tinent AFRICA has been a lode- stone to hundreds of explorers, fortune-hunters eager for gold and diamonds, often a refuge for men of the world down "on their luck, and many times in the past few years the fascinating subject for man adventurous, and melod→ ramatic motion pictures.

Wheeler and Woolsey, those two comedians who have sagacious heads behind their amusing and ridiculous comedy. took careful estimate of the emphasis that film producers and the public had placed upon the African lure. Wheeler and Woolsey. then saw "Tarzan" and again took apprai; sal of the situation. Then they décided that much too much em- phasis had been placed upon Africa, elephants, wild animals, wild men, wild life and calls of the "wild. Result, "So This Is Africa!" which comes on Satur day at the Alhambra. Theatre.

"So This Is Africa!" · produced by Columbia Studios under the direction of Eddle Cline, boldly puts Africa in its proper place. It reveals for the first time on the talking screeni В Jecret of that wild and strange continent that has never been known be-. fore. (The wildest thing in Africa is not the animals, not the men, not the life and not the calls of the Tarzan but the Women!)

show

Wheeler and Woolsey present "80 This Is Africa!" to the pub- lle with the feeling that they made a definite contribution not only to the knowledge but also the philosophy of the world at large. These comedian felt that 'the world was taking its Africa problem much too seriously for the good of International Relationa Much too seriously even for a sane per- spective. So Wheeler and Woolsey Africa decided to

what really was.

Together with Raquel Torres and Esther Muir, Wheeler and Woolsey assembled a courageous safari to explore the deepest in- terior of Africa, armed to the hilt to fight off elephants, water buffalo, hippopotami, rhinoceroses, lions, tigers and other wild anim- als. They forgot all about locusts and left their Filtguns at home. Their suffering, therefore, is not only extreme when a swarm of locusts attack them, but hilarious. Most important is the revelation of the habits of the Amazon wo- men that Wheeler and Woolsey stumbled upon in "a little known part of the jungle near the African equator.

How other explorers missed this violent and active tribe of huge and beautiful women is more than Wheeler and Woolsey could de cide. The only feasible explana- tion how this tribe has been un- known to the world for so long. is that other explorers who dis- covered them were devoured by Amazon loving, and died in their violent embraces. (Unsung-but... heroes none the less).

Abandoning ancient themes for the time being, DeMille depicts the revolt of the younger generation "against the corruption which allowe racketeering full away. With a novel and well-knit story, which was provided by Bartlett Cormack, events move to a thundering climax which had the audience handing on to the edge of its seats..

Of particular brilliance is the performance contributed by Char- les Bickford as the boss racketeer who avades the law only to fail into the hands of the young vigilan- tes. This role definitely marks him "as "die" of the finest sators of the screen to-day

The only feminine role to impor- tance was played by Judith Allen who made her screen debut in this picture. She will be well worth
