Married by Blood
The Gypsy Bride's Vow
Do you know that when gypsies which marry, they take a voW does not have to be broken "in case of divorce?
There are many who urge that the Christian marriage vow should be amended so that if a marriage is.. dissolved the parties will not have been gulity of breaking solemn undertakings.
This argument is usually advan ced by leaders of modern opinion, but it is primitive in its basis if the data collected by Lady Eleanor Smith can be relied upon,
Before she wrote her famous. circus and gypsy novel, *Red Wagon," which British Interna- tional have completed Lady Eleanor spent many months travel- Ling with gypsies in their caravan encampments. She says in her story that when the gypsy bride and groom marry, they stand in the centre of circle friends, and vow before them all, that they. will be true to each other until love has left theheart of one or the other, Then the father of the bride takes a hunting knife and, making an incision on the. wrists of both the parties, he presses the wounds together de- claring them married by the mingling of the blood.
It was at one time doubtful whether such a scene, would be shown in the "Red Wagon" film, in case it were considered too re- volting, but the ceremony, played by Charles Bickford as Joe Prince, and Raquel Torres as Sheba the gypsy bride, is so much a part of the story that it has been decided to film the "blood marriage" ex- actly as Lady Eleanor Smith de-.. clares authentic,

MISS NAYLOR, IMPORTER" OF
DRESSES.
Miss Naylor is about to have a clearance sale on all her dresses,... sults etc. and so the prospective buyers had better make a note of that, as there are some wonder- fui .bargains to be had. Some lovely afternoon dresses attract- ed my notice, and I particularly made note of one black silk one artistically trimmed with red, vel vet. It was severely plain yet there was
a note of distinctive smartness about its very severe- ness. The finishing touches of red, were just in the right places," and only enhanced the dress. The prices of these afternoon dresses are from 423-5 while among the evening frock barguins can be made up to 75.
GORDON'S
About the most annoying thing is to find that you are wearing uncomfortable shoes, especially when you have gone out for some sport, having made up your mind beforehand that you would en- joy yourself to the full and then. being prevented from doing so by uncomfortable shoes! Those who are keen lovers of golf will no doubt. appreciate the new stock of golf shoes at Gordon's as they are both comfortable and flexi- ble. Besides these two important factors they have the advantage of being light in weight and what is most desirable in these times of depression, almost indestructi-
ble.
A USEFUL FASHION
The separate blouse and coated, represent old, yet very modern,
and most useful extras.
Once more the dark, long skirt is the correct choice with these light and Hecorative blouses.
Again, it is best as a youthful fashion, be- cause the cut in half-style is trying to the more mature figure. To the young people, especially those going on cruises or staying away for week-end house-part- fes and at hotels, the separate blouse and coatee fashion is use-... ful, as it adds to the variety of their wardrobe without requiring much extra space in packing..
This plain tight velvet or satin' skirt in black or some dark colour is also a standby for accessories. as over it can be worn silver or gold lame" oloored laces, and any gay novel remnants made up. The costee, or half blotise and. cost, is no less useful, as it can be worn over a fragile, and pos sibly chilly, chiffony sort of dress It is Helpful in a limited wardrobe to be able to ring the changes.
The careful, elegant woman never confuse the elaborate blouse with the practical shirts. which were "and are destined to wear with the tailored coat, and skirts, although they do require

very skilful cut, and above all, must be immaculately fresh and dainty.
It is a tribute to the skill of modern designers that they should, have been able to renew the dim- cult made of light blouses with
dark skirts and render it to be attractive and practical
MAIZEE.
Jewellery is again becoming more and more the craze of the season. It is vastly different from the style of jewellery worn a few years ago and is peculiar to fashions of to-day in that it goes well with the smart severe frocks. Most of it is in steel with cut stones usually only a few of the latter but large and promin- ent. Sometimes the whole neck- iace or bracelet is just all of steel, platinum, or gold etc. Mal- zee has just received one of the smartest collections of this mo- der jewellery that I have seen for a long time. There three piece sets of Rhine Stone bracelets, necklaces, and clips all to match. Also some smart buck-" les and clips to match and var- ious other jewellery for costumes." evening dresses etc. Some pa- culiar broaches attracted my at- tention as they were very differ- ent from anything that I had ever seen before. Most of them looked as if they were made of bone, and practically all were 'in' the shape of some animal.
WHITEWAY'S

This seems to be the Baby week at Whiteaways for the baby can get some lovely things for") himself ever so cheaply. For in- stance there were some Alwian folding baby carriages, real beast- les, and just because they were slightly damaged in transit the price has been reduced from 995 each to $29,50. But as baby
can't be kept warm in a cot it- self some wonderful bargains have been offered in Baby Cot Blankets in pastel shades of pink. blue, gold and fawn, all made of the purest wool and measur ing 26" by 36."
I noticed some artistic English made Parchment lamp abades "In ever so many designs, delicately, painted, and ever so cheery look- ing! When I looked at the price I could hardly believe myself they seemed so extraordinary cheap- some of them 75 cts, and some only 50 cts each,

LANÉ CRAWFORD'S. Lane Crawford's is still having its big sale on so that there is still a chance for the belated purchasers to make a good bar- gain. Amongst various goods I noticed same rather nice evening. -capes and little coatees. It would prove a hard job of choos- ing one from this variety of de- sign and colour as each seemed as desirable as the one before. There were two particular ones that struck my fancy, however, One of black Chenile Velvet with little frilla on the sleeves,' intricately clasping in front with A diamond buckle. the other Jooked very striking made of tin- bel gold with big puffed sleeves adding a finishing touch to it.
