FEATHERS FOR FROCKS

Fine frocks are often trimmed with fine feathers.

Boas made of ostrich feathers and sweeping plumes have not made much headway in the fash- lon world, but there are numer- ous other ways in which dress- makers use them to enhance the beauty of a well planned dress.

For instance you see"white ost- rich feathers used for sleeves an a black dress, with the happiest results.

Again, strands of ostrich fea- thers are found applied vertically. round the lower part of a skirt. The sti centre of the feather helps to emphasise the spreading toward the tendency outwards 'hem which" every smart skirt is expected to display.

Shoulder Capes

Shoulder capes are made from ostrich feathers. Those are used, too, for longer cloaks.

Coq feathers in different colours Some are also used for wraps,

of the most attractive of these than short, barely more elbow-length capes Atting very close to the shoulders, "squared" by the use of tufts of curled feathers:

The use of feathers is not con- ̈ fined to dresses. There are night- dress cases made from soft goose Dr. coq feathers with added de- coration in the form of a doll's head in the centre.

FIRST SPRING COLOURS

Cumberland Tweeds For Riviera

Unusual colours and light- weight textures are a feature of the new Cumberland tweeds fash- loned into frocks and ensembles ..the by Capt. Molyneux for Riviera, where drawing cover for early spring fashions is considered great sport during the last phase of the winter season.

These new colours are. fresh and gay without being too vivid. and they can be imagined in the foreground of, blooming mimoss trees as well as Meditárrancan Beax There is a new coral-pink, rather deep in tone, a green verg- ing on the strata sometimes seen through turquoise matrix......and

blue that is neither sky nor duck-egg. but just between the two,

Light noisette is a new tone in belge, and this is worked up to "show off" next a small brown and greige checked tweed mix- ture which supplies a lining to a half-length coat of plain belge latnage worn over a plain lainage dress with brown buttons and belt.

Solo tones, however, are a more. evident choice in these new tweeds. It is worth while watch- ing tones of pale blue for early spring suits, for the colour has been percolating through mid- season collections in a subtle and unobtrusive way.

Another designer urges you to follow the idea in a more ex- your coat aggerated manner on sleeve-the upper outside arm for preference. A straight full-length dust-coat style in natural tussore, lined, with fine tweed tinged green, la suggested for wear over this pale blue Cumberland tweed

FASHION'S NEW OUTLINES

Sophistication Replaces Simplicity

Sophistication is the word pass- ing along the corridors of fashion at the moment, We may culti- vate airs and graces rather than look demure......or vice versa,

Many of the Paris designers seemed to be getting somewhat bored with well-studied simpli- city, so gave an extra flip to the outline. Sleeves started the ball rolling with many changes wrought in fur trimmings and to !! from

the stereotyed collar none at all. Value for fur money went into deep cuffs reaching well above the elbows, leg o' mut-" ton styles sloplag down into narrow wrists; slim "bishop" sleeves and even bushy puffs of fox

and lynx, set above. long narrow sleeves of lainage or s spiral of fox was introduced to emphasise slimmer and straighter coat lines,

Я

I saw one of the best adapta- tions of this form the other day with the spiral in silver fox on bright dark, green straight The half-length collarless coat. Irock was in the same coloured iainage, and the ensemble looked particularly smart capped by a green velvet beret.

TURRET CUT BORDER" An interesting black coat-frock has a side front fastening with a "turret cut border outlined by black patent leather, and the leather is colled in cornucopia fashion from the apex of raised shoulders to a well-modulated depth fore and aft of them.

suft

A waist-length black cape, with ridged gore lines over the should- ers lending a "boxed" effect also looks stračtive for a brown tweed centre front coat-frock with a button fastening and narrow beaver collar descending from other side of the neck to pass under the waistbelt, PEMBI Another unexpected encounter. in Paris is the dark blouse, with lighter-coloured plain tweed suits, Brown has been put with a pale blue tweed and although a black patent leather belt and buttons for one of the Intent aults: in pale blue tweed might suggest black blouse, it comes nama, surprise made, almost in replies" form to the facket except for being fuck-- ed-in Both jacket and blouse close under a set of two deep revers, at the alde-one rising to button near the shoulder and the other dropping beneath to button in the opposite direction Pa BRA COAT-FROCK LINE

Light olive green lainage makes another background for a con- trast next black; and, given a first glimpse of the model, one imagines: a dress of the green with black forearms and a vastee

front. An illusion, of course, for the green is one of the new slim-fitting cost-frock lines, and the black a slender frock worn- underneath. To emphasise the contrast a glistening black fox necklace necklet is slipped on over the head and adds charin to the mat black frock when it

is worn without its mate,

The darkest blug lainage is urged for short-sleeved coat- frocks, and sunny winter days them on the Riviera, will see explotted in cleverly designed puff or frilled elbow lengths, Some of these puff sleeves are made rather wide at the top to shrink into a narrow fitting beneath the elbows, and blue coat with an ermine bow-tio. Fur collar lines "are not usual, however, for these. new lines and are replaced fre- quently by. short frilled effects and slender cowl-hooded" <back drops.

suit and helps make a perfect ensemble.

Contrasts 'appear again in a shaded pale grey astrakhan shawi collar for the half-length ‘slack, coat, designed to tone with the coral-pink frock, while a rati- length cape rings in schauge for "the matrix-green dress. This||cape. has a nutria fur trimming" the neckline.

Enamel eyelet boles to tone replace buttons on some of the new models. and" have simple bootlace strings of the fabric not wider than baby ribboa. These facings either tone with the dress or contrast and tone with the fur tripming used on a erat or cape, instance this lacing In one

"SHADES OF NIGHT

Vivid colours such as scarlet and flame red will diner from bright but subdued day-wear ones for Riviera nights; Severe lines with trained lengths will look entrancing in velvet, one scariet gown by a large offered velvet bow.

Pale salmon-pink moire is ade up to convey severity in Hoe and design.

It almost seems that these new colours were chosen to contrast next the various shades of blue worn at the Embassy Ball, and they can be visualised against. black, Nile green, pale yellow, and pansy as well as white. All these colours were conspicuous in this pageantry of beautiful evening gowns. A pale blue and silver efective lame gown struck an

note worn under a long dark blue velvet cloak trimmed with silver fox, and a gown in pansy-coloured velvet had orchid-mauve ostrich feather fringe sleeves that mould- ed the shoulders on a broad line. Touches of vivid colour instead of white were featured on black. Garnet red with black also prov- ed an interesting note, and a subtle one. amidst a galaxy of lighter and brighter colours.
