QUARREL OVER

Women in England grow less.... interested each year in the mo- dela Treated by "dress" designers in `Paris.

French designers are coming to London to get our custom,- and each Reason fower English women go to Paris for their clothes,

I

"Show your shoulders". was the advice of London designers at the beginning of the season, and wo- men' ayer here seem to have ad- opted this suggestion for their evening frock

In Paris the cry is just the opposite: "Murde up."

Wool

velvet Flum-coloured makes the Löndon evening dress, and ruching of the frock mater- lal emphasises the off-the-shoul- der neckline. The skirt is cut to a train at the back.

Beauty Hint

» A FACE COCKTAIL

Discolorations of the arms and legs can be whitened by kab- bing in lemon juice undiluted, but, as this is rather drying, it must always be followed by "an application of skin food or cold cream.

Beautyspecially have dim- covered the value of lemons, and they make them into creams and lotions for whitening and bleaching the skin.

Those who are feeling jaded and in need of a pick-me-up a may add to this summer menu the new cocktail" treatmerit, As it is used externally it can be taken even by those of tee- total persuasion with impunity, and though non-alcoholic there "Cocktails" are must stimulating.

HOME TREATMENT

First the face is cleansed with" refreshing tonics and soft creams. Every scrap of make-up is res moved until one feels like a ́ new- born babe..

After this massage creams and sweet-amelling oils mixed toge,, ther are patted into the skiì by deft angers

They are then removed, and pads soaked in tonic and astrin- gent are placed all over the face,

These are! covered with ganze, and tonic is dabbed on top until

it trickles through: This is won derfully refreshing and can quite easily be done at home.

We are now much more parti- cular about our undies." And we have to be, for, with frocks that fit like a glove, these dainty Ettle Items must be super-sleek

Satin, an old favourite, is being used a great deal this year, pro- bably because it sets so well on the cross, and all the new knick- ers, petticoats, nighties, chemises and, of course, brassieres, are cut this way

and stretched to the figure.

Deep ecru lace, rather coarse, and preferably needle-run, is the most favoured trimming, and lends itself to beautiful hand- work. It is usually satin-stitch- ed to the material at the edge of the pattern.

Richelieu, or cutwork, is used for the motif, which is now seen in such odd places as a hip, or the edge of a knicker, rather than in the acknowledged centre of the bodies.

Another potion is to have all the main seams hemstitched. This is a pretty and quick way! though, of course the seams will not stand the same strain as they would if carefully hand-sewn

UNDIES

Nunsvelling is another material used for some of the nicest ling- erie sets. For up-country wear it will be found-warmer than" the silk, and there is nothing like it for making up "tailored" undies, and those with that very Jaunty air, made in a plain colour and bordered with a binding of a different shade.

The vogue for the brassiere- knicker set joined together is on the Increase since, a smooth, flat line can be got in front, and, in some cases, there need not be any elastic at the back. This, of course, is a tremendous boon when a very tight frock has to be considerad.

As for colours, peach heads the rest in, fashionable trouss- eaux, with turquoise blue not far behind.

a

White is rather out of fashion for the moment. Its place is being taken by pearl pink, which has so Rttle colour mi and is so delicately tinted that it is, if anything, even fresner. looking than pure white.

There is one point, however, 1 should like to emphasise in deal- ing with underwear, ba dt; wool, rayon or cotton, and that is the importance of careful washing

If you take the trouble to wash your own: undies, or to have them Washed at home under your supervision they will last three times as long and you will feel justined in making them choice materials.
