Sally Eilers as the girl is in love with the young sailor, but Victor Jory tries his untmost to win her for himself. They are seen in a dance marathon. "THE SIGN OF THE CROSS"
Showing at Queen's
on Friday
Elissa Landi won one of the two leading roles in Cecil B. De Millés spectacular romanco of pagan Rome, "The Sign of the Cross," which comes to the Queen's Theatre on Friday, against what Holly- woodites agree was the toughest. competition ever offered for one rolu.
DeMille selected Miss Landi after interviewing hundreds of applicants, studying performances of actress in fifty-three feature, pictures, and viewing 114 screen tests. Tho search is said to have been one of the most exhaustive aver made in Hollywood.
Miss Landi borrowed by Para- mount from the Fox studios, to whom she is "under contract, ap- pear with Frederic March, Clau- dette Colbert and Charles Laugh-
ton.
Miss Landi was born in Venice, Italy, the daughter of Countess Zenardi-Landi of Austria. She was educated by private tutors in Eng- land and later joined a repertoire company at Oxford to gather mate- rial for a book. Her success on the stage however, brought her offers from continental film producers, who featured her in eight pictureJ.
In 1000 Roubes Mamoulian, Para- mount director, who at the time was directing plays for A Woods in New York, brought her to America and starred her in the stage ver- sion of "A Farewell to Arms." Her performance in this resulted in her Fox contract. During the last two years she has appeared in nine pictures, among them being "Body and" Soul," "The Yellow Ticket" and "A Passport to Hell."
In addition to her acting, Miss Landi is a writer of distinction and has published three novsis, two in England and one in America.
In "The Sign of the Cross" abe plays the role of the Christian maiden who teaches Marcus Super- bus, young Roman aristocrat, the secret of her kind of love."
