SENTENCE UPHELD

But Option Of A Fine. Granted

The case in which a Chinese woman was sentenced to six months' imprisonment in connec- tion with harbouring Ave girls for the purposes of prostitution, was re-opened before Mr. S. Balfour at Central Magistracy yesterday, when Mr. J. B. Prentis, for the de- fendant, asked for a re-hearing.

Mr. Prentis said that the grounds for the defence was that this was a case where all the girls con- cerned in the case were prostitutes

and that they had practised as such in Canton. They found bust- ness very dull in that port and they wanted to go to Amoy where they were told they could make more money. So far as the de- fendant was concerned, she was employed by one of the girls as an amah and she was merely go- ing with them to Amoy. Where then did the question of harbour- ing come in?

Inspector Elston who had charge of the case for the prosecution, said that he submitted the charges were properly brought and that sentence passed was quite appro- priate. If It was a case of a sin- gle prostitute passing through on her own, that would be a different story for she would be outside the law, but the woman had five girls with her, and its exploitation was aimed at by the Ordinance under which the charge was brought.

After hearing the evidence call- ed by the defence, Mr. Balfour confirmed the sentence passed at

sought could not be released until the ship had received her com- plement, or the true state of affairs would be noised abroad" and no more Chinese would be forth- coming.
