Telephones, Dairies, Lands and Ropes were in active demand to day, and markod higher. In the lower-priced shares, Hotels, "Lights and Cements ensed off to some ex- tent, and were on offer for forward delivery.

In the mining section, there was a fair amount of activity, and dealings were reported in Antamoks. Baguio Gold and Raute at 80 cents. 78 cents and $121 respectively.

Silver prices were lower yester day to the extent of 1/8 for Ready and 3/16 for Forward, the quota tions being 18.1/18 and 18 respec tively. Silver advices reported Indian Bazaars as having sold. The Continent also sold. China Banks bought. The tone at the close was steady. In America the rate was slightly lower at 37 for September,

New York advices reported the opening rate at 4.54) and the cloe- ing rate at 4,044. The highest rate done was 4.50).,

Sterling.

Small business was done during the course of the morning at 1/5 for October followed later by a other transaction at 1/8 for second half September. The market closed at lunch time with sellera at 1/4. 31/22 September, 1/3 October and 1/5.1/38 November, buyers at 1/16 higher respectively.

U.S. Dollars.

40 Bonds Asia Landa, Limited, has received the following report from their New York correspondents, E. A. Pierco & Co. The market righted itself today, there being no current development of any importance other than the possibility of a more aggressive attitude by the Administration regarding credit expansion. Without real stimulation no particular or immediate change seems indicated.

Wheat: A very thin market. However, short covering and sobe commission house buying caused a rally.

Cotton: There has been much less hedge selling. Consequently the market was steadier. Near the close a large line of Mays, apparently bought by one interest, caused a higher close. The weather is less favourable.

Silver: A generally featureless market. Within a norrow range some switching is being dena for September...
