Departure
Tet suddenly forsook.
The "Gazette " of Saturday. Of the town where he had ruled
so long, announces the intended departure. of Sir John Bowring on sick certificate in the "Magicienne," the office of Governor devolving of course upon the Honourable, the Lieutenant Governor.
The Magicienne" our readers are aware proceeds to Manila and
Labuan. We have not learnt whe- ther Mahehow Wong takes passage In her, or whether he is to be sent with the other convicts in the ship for which tenders have been in- vited. Pursuing the infatuated course which has been the"" scan- dalum magnatum" of a career otherwise characterised by vanity and apostacy, we should not be at all surprised.to learn that Sir John has either given poor Mah a com- plimentary letter to the Governor of Labuan, or that he (Sir John) will himself, on his arrival at that carbonle oasis, make suitable ar- rangement for the innocent's re- ception":
We think it likely Sir John will make a treaty with the wreckers at the Prata Shoal on his way down--but we do not wish this mentioned and spread all over the Colony like the extract from Str Bulwer Lytton's dispatch. referring to Dr. Bridges was. We only say we think it likely.

Thurs- day afternoon at Thirteen Mile Beach, near Castle Pest, I feel it is my duty to warn bathers of the dangerous currents to be met with at that particular beach. A Chinese bather was out of his depth, and being caught in thei current could not get back into shallow water and was drowning when his distress was noticed by a ship's officer who very gallantly went to the drowning man's as-

A motor accident which resulted in the death of an old woman, occurred near No. 254. Des Voeux Road, West on Saturday morning shortly after 9 a.m.

NO RAIN
FINE WEATHER RETURN ON SUNDAY, ་་་
Only .09 of an inch of rain fell during the week-end. The heavy clouds and gusts of Baturday night produced no more than a few showers, that made no difference to the water supply.
Mr. C. W. Jeffries pointed out in the interesting notes on August and Beptember" weather, published in our issue of Saturday, that a dry August is often followed by a drenching. September. On Friday, especially when a blinding fash and deep crack of thunder came from black clouds" overhead, it. looked as if this "custom" would be followed.
As it is we have again bine skles and weather like Aden, while our rainfall is 26 inches below average: Still, the typhoon'season does not Beem to be over!
