NEW BRITISH- MERCHANT SHIPS.
35,000 TONS INCREASE.
London. Within the last three months the total of now merchant shipping on the stocks in British yards has risen by 33,101 tons. This welcome increase, recorded by Lloyd's Register, continues the up- ward movement which, for the first time since March, 1930, was noted as the end of the opening quarter of 1833.
*
British yards are now working on 987,502 tons of new shipping, which. is nearly 7,000 tops in excess of what they were building twelve months ago. The turn of the tide may be slow, but it appears to be sure.
A striking contrast is afforded by the statistics from foreign shipyards. Their current output of 444,993 tons is not only 10 per cent, less than that at the end of March, but is the lowest recorded for twenty-three years Construction now under way in the five countries with the largest production is as follows:

Japan Sweden Germany

Big Drop in U.S.
The United States, which, until recently, showed big figures for new constraction, has now practically disappeared from the return, and le building only 2,038 tons of mer- This shimp in chant shipping.
