MARINE INSUR- ANCE

FIRE RISKS ON CHINA COASTAL SHIPPING

Thuring 1952 the marine insurance results of Chinese companies pro- duced results similar to those in other countries, in that the volume of business and the premium in- comes continued to fall under the infuence of economic conditions.

As regards Chinese coastal trade; however, there were fewer total losses than in immediately preced ing years.

The Sino-Japanese hostilities pro. duced a substantial volume of war risk insurance, but through cau- tious underwriting it is believed that the losses, have not been of any great dimensions.

The opening of new highways, particularly

in the Shanghai Hangchow areas, has brought numerous Chinese companies into the motor insurance field, which previously bad been practically monopolised, by foreign officers.

These new highways, it is con sidered; may become a big factor in aiding the theft of motor vehicles, which poor roads in the past na- turally handicapped. Thus, the new roadways are tending to com- plicate the difficulties of the under- writers of motor insurance, while the much larger number and cost of third-party claims, and the rising charges for repairs, have led to increasingly unfavourable results
