Currency Depreciation. While currency depreciation bas contributed to the growth of trade barriers and was probably one of the causes of the continued fall in prices in terms of gold since the dutumn of 1931, it has secured to the exports of the countries having recourse to it a somewhat greater share in world markets than pre viously,

Clearing agreements and dis criminative trade barriers, erected in order to regulate bilateral- trade balances, have, since the autumn of 1901, led to a re-distribution of imports and exports of many coun- tries. This has been very un-" favourable for. certain countries which are largely dependent upon so-called triangular trade.

Particular attention has been de voted to the structural changes in- dicated by the trade figures of certain countries. Many agricultur al produce a greater stars of their consumption of industrial manu- factures, and some of them such as India and Egypt-have replaced a part of their production of agri cultural products for exports by the production of foodstuffs previously imported. Certain indistrial coun- tries have also become more self- sufficient in food products; the in- erease in self-sufficiency has, how ever, developed simultaneously with the impoverishment of both industrial and non-industrial coun tries..

American Position.

One of the most important facte pointed out in the analysis of trade of individual countries contained. in the Review of World Trade Jor 1932, issued by the League Inta!- ligence Service, is the weakening of the competitive power of the manufacturing industry in the United States of América.

By the middle of 1930, the value of the exports of manufactured articles from the United States of America, the United Kingdom and Germany was almost the same and for each of the three was about twice as great as that of Erance. Daring the last quarter of 1993, on the other hand, that of the United States of America represented only. 59 per cent of the German, e per cent of the British and was only plightly higher than the French ex- ports of manufactured goods,

"Asia Tands, Limited, has received the following report from their New York correspondente, EL A. Fierce & Co. The market was essentially unchanged. However, there was a good underlying demand for stocks, although this demand may await soft spots for making purchase. Wheat: The bullish American and Canadian crop reports were off set by slow foreign demand for Canadian wheat. The current estimados of European wheat production, including Russia give 60,000,000 bushels more than the previous season. Cotton: Trading was relatively light, reflecting the uncertainty regarding the crop estimate due on August. 8th. Silver: There is a general indisposition on the part of all classes of traders to press their commitments either way, pending new developments.
