SHILLING SHIRT LONDON EXCHANGE

FROM JAPAN

British Government and Dumping

MENACE OF THE TWO. PENNY SOCK

Shilling shirts and twopenny socks made in Japan are being used na typical examples of the subsidised Japanese competition with which British manufacturers are having to contend.

Japance operatives work for ad. a day and less. With rates like these it is impossible for British manufacturers to compete, but the Government contends that mutual understanding and agreement would be better than the use of "compulsory methods" which hare been urged.

Voluntary Agreement.

The Japanese answer to the Brit- ish proposal for a conference for the mutual allocation of world mar- kets is being considered by the Government. Major Colville, Secre tary to the Department of Over- sena Track, stated in the House of Commons that the Government wished in agreement to be arrived at.by voluntary mean, but they made it plain, he added, that they did not intend to cease to take an interest in it, and when the con- ference meets they intended to watch it closely and give all the help they could to a solution of the problem.

Mr. Hammersley (Conservativė M.P. for Stockport) declared that this was not ordinary business com- petition These goods were being dumped into already-saturated mar¬ kets.

Producing a striped shirt, he said that Japan, was able to sell it in the British market at 1s, including the duty. It would cost 1s. 6d. to produce here if our workpeople H.K.S

received no wages at all and if the 700 N. manufacturer's overhead costs con- 656 N.sisted only of rates, etc.

BRITISH TRADE WITH FINLAND

LONDON, July 29, COMMERCIAL negotiations be

tween Britain and Finland are proceeding.

Colonel D. J. Colville, for the Board of Trade, stated in Parlis ment yesterday evening that, apart. from a few minor points of detail, a general agreement had been

reached."

The drafting of the treaty is now proceeding and Col. Colville hopes to arrange for its signature by the end of August.-British Wireless.

Samples of Japanese underwear were produced by Major ProCTOS (Conservative member for Accring ton), and socks that could be sold at 2d. per pair. We could not pre- serve the standard of life in Lan- cashire if the Government permitt- ed these goods to enter the coun try.

Anglo-Japanese Treaty.

Demands that the Government should abrogate the Anglo-Japanese Treaty are contained in morandum sent by the executive of the Joint Committee of Cotton

# me-

Trade Organisations to the Presi- dent of the Board of Trade. It suggests an embargs on Japanese cotton goods prior to any confer ence with Japan.

"Should the Japanese delay in sending representatives to the pro- posed conversations, it says, the British Government should proceed with formal notice to abrogate the treaties. Otherwise the date at which, they will be free to afford adequate protection to the British cotton export trade will be deferred- beyond the margin of prüdence.

"The Government is particularly urged to bear in mind that the British trade itself has no lever of any kind which it can employ to induce the Japanese to place its limits on their own field of activity. It is essential that the conversations should open on the basis of a clear declaration by the Goverment that this is in fact, the situation. Other wise it is highly unlikely that the Japanese will yield any ground whatever."

London, July 4.-Though there 684 18. a tairly big turnover daily in Imperial Chemical shares, the price

It would not be surprising, however, if "Ikeys" gained in int vestment popularity before long. Reports regarding the state order books are quite encouraging, considering the state of world trade as a whole, and there are always investors who are prepared to take a long view and buy on prospects. Tinder, more normal trading conditions the chemical combine should do well.

Meanwhile the management is energetic in its search for new fields of enterprise. The latest de velopment is connected with the treatment of steel. A new de greasing process has been evolved whereby the metal is rendered rustproof. There is a big outlet for this rustproof steel in such mass-production trades as motor car manufacturing, wringer making, Shippingtelis employed in positions and all other productions where
