ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE
PAST YEAR
WILS
held at
The Annual General Meeting of the General Electric Company, Limited,
Magnet House, Kingsway, London, W.C.
The Chairman, Sir Hugo Hirst,
· said :-
The net result is that we are £44,000 behind last year in our realized net profit. While this set- back is "regrettable, we must con- sider ourselves very fortunate that it is not much greater, especially when, we compare our position with that of the electrical companies in other parts of the world. In Germany, in America, in Switzerland, the great concerns which used to dominate the electrical world and to whom we looked, for guidance and in- spiration have suffered a setback, nott of 4 or 5 per cent., as in our
case, but of 40 or 50 per cent.
In contrast with our profit of a million, some of the leading com panies
abroad show losses, of
this
millions of pounds. So drastic a reversal of fortune shows that they have experienced the full effect of world depression. Wa in. country have suffered, from these conditions mainly because they haye imposed upon our Govern- ment Departments · and public bodies the need for economy. lo consequence, there has been a fall- ing off in the orders received in our heavy engineering department.
The full effect of this reduction has not yet been felt. It will hit us more severely in the current year than it did in the post 12 months.
In mase-production articles the volume of consumption has kept fairly stationary, but their pro- duction has been shared by too many, new-comers in the industry and, in consequence, prices obtain ed have been very depressed..
Search for New Work. Our scientists and engineers are now busy on the task of finding new work to take the place of the old. I am confident that they will find it, but it may well be of such a nature that the present, lay-out and equipment of certain of our engineering shops may not be adapted to meet it,

ADVERSE EFFECT OF EXCHANGE UNCERTAINTY

which shows an increase of;
38,10% Tons Superior 18,120 Tons Browns,
The increase of Whites is largely accounted for by the sale of the exportable balances of 1931 sop estimated at 30,000 tons to a Chi neae exporter. The price at which this transaction was effected is un- known though it is believed to be not below 164 which, combined with the fact that the sugar is lying at expensive outports, should mean that consuming markets will not be affected by offerings of these sugars at below current rates at any rate for the meantime. As far as is known the NIVAS are firm at their limit of 1.6.-for Crop 1932 Whites and the success of the above-mentioned large (for these days) transaction would appear to depend on the maintenance of this attitude by the NIVAS and on whether there are any "shorts" 5.00 for 1831 crop. In our opinion. the short position, if any, is not likely o be Targe and exchange will con- tinue to be the dominating factor Included in the Browns sales are transactions for account of Hong Kong and New Zealand Refiners.

Success of the Osira Lamp. Important changes have also been taking place in our lamp works. The new electric discharge lamp- now called the Osira lamp-to which I referred in my speech last year, has already proved the great success that we anticipated. The photo electric cell is already applied to the precise and auto- matic control of many of our more difficult factory operations and also of illumination systems. It is des- tined to find many more applica tions in industrial and commercial activities.

Future Possibilities, Having dealt so far with the kaleidoscopic changes which are constantly going on in our methods of production, I would like, in the time remaining to me, to draw your attention to possibilities that"] lie beyond our scientific and technical research to meet immedi ate industrial requirements Your company is busily engaged in look ing with a prophetic, as well an a practical eye well into the fu ture. When physicists showed- us, by the discovery of the valve, how electricity could be freed from the trammels of metallic conductors, a new world was opened up. Very few people realized, at the time, the immense potentialities of that discovery. Broadcasting, long-dis tanco wireless telephony and tele- graphy, talking films, the photo electric cell and television among the firstfruite of what ap peared to bé no more than an in- leresting product of laboratory re- search, Civilization is only now beginning to enjoy these fruits. The development of valve and radio technique is pointing to the possibility of receiving and trans- mitting messages over long dis fances with apparatus little larger than a motor headlighter

Azia Landa, Limited, has received the following report from their New Fork correspondents, E. & Pierce & Co. We think that the reactionary tendencies which showed themselves this afternoon will not develop into a full-fledged reaction in the immediate future. From a day to day trading standpoint we would suggest some purchases on any irregularities tomorrow. Wheat: The subsidence of distressed liquida tion encouraged some replacing of long lines by belated shorts. Miller brokers bought. Canadian crop news is unfavourable. Catton: Opened higher and continued to advance on a demand from the Trade, due to too much rain in the Central Belt. The market eased later in sympathy with the Stock Market: The decline caught stop-orders and the Trade bought more freely. Silver: Featurelsa today. Commission Houses liquidated and the Trade and Banks bought. The market was not much impressed by the Silver Agreement in London. Until further. notice the New York Silver Exchange opens at eleven and closes at two. The market will be closed this Saturday, though the commodity markets will be open on Saturday as usual,
