Changing China is an interesting and useful quarterly. The articles which it contains have been written in the form of letters by men and women of various ranks of life who are living in the interior of China. They are not professional writers with any axe to grind but are describing what they have actually seen and experienced The reader gets a picture or rather a series of pictures of life in Modem China, and at the same time a resumé of the progress made in industrial development during the past, quarter

INDIA TO MEET SCOTLAND IN SEMI- FINAL

PORTUGAL GOES DOWN IN FIRST

· ROUND

The first round of the International Lawn Bowls Tournament was played at the K.C.C. yesterday evening and the event excited a lot of interest, there heing a very large gathering to follow the fate of the respective nationalities.

England accounted for Portugal, India beat Wales, the Filipinos got the better of the Irishmen, while Scotland had things all her own way against Australia.

Saturday's Results

The Club de Recreio lost their position at the top of the senior league table on Saturday when they went un- ler to the K.C.C. team, losing on all three rinks.

The Bowling Green visited the Police and came away with full points while in the Dock Derby which was play. ed at Taikoo, the home team got the points. The match between Craigengower and Civil Service was not played as a tribute to the memory of the late Mr. Holdman.

There were only three watches in the second division. The Bowling Green took full points from the Indians in somewhat effortless manner, while the K.C.C. only just managed to snatch victory from the Polk being up by three shots at the end of the game. The Electric R.C. were ousted by the Club de Recreio.

GRIMMITT AND OMAR IN DEADLY

FORM

The success of England over Por tugal yesterday was mainly due to the excellent performance of the English skip, Grimmitt who time after time played wonderful bowls. Bradbury was one of the strongest link in the team and Hampton as No. i also was responsible for good work, but Cullen seemed to strike a bad patch yesterday, Luz had not the support from his team that Grimmitt enjoyed and although Portugal was leading by 10-6 t the end of the eighth head England drew level and went ahead to lend by 16 to 11 by the seventeenth head. The last head found the Portuguese side with eight points to get for a tie, which was impossible with the England playing so well. The Portuguess however managed to score two in the last head to lose by six shots in all.

India's Win Brilliant. The Indians had quite a time accounting for Wales, as the latter team struck a good patch early on and had the Indians all out to keep up. There was nothing in it over the first dozen heads, but thereafter the Indian's superiority began to tell and Omar's brilliant work as skip slowly but surely told its tale India will be meeting Scotland in the next round, if the team can reproduce yeater day's form, their passage into the fiual is a foregone conclusion.

Scotland Wins,

Scotland had nothing to do to account for the weak Australian team and led from start to finish. The Australians as the score below will show, went down by the heavi- est margin of the afternoon.

Filipinos Daute Surprise. The Phillippines accounted for Ireland in comfortable fashion and this was indeed a surprise result. The whole team played well toge ther and backed up their skip ex- ceptionally well. Basa was & deadly form and supported by Espina who as No. 1 always had something to pay and Atienza, who was very accurate at. No. 2 Basin had things, practically all his own way. The Filipinos fed from start. to Enish
