CHINESE ATHLETIC EN FETE AT

NORTH POINT

There were no fewer than three swimming galas on Saturday and supporters of local swimming were hard to it to decide which entertainment they should see.

pist

The V.R.C. and the Y.M.C.A. both staged very auc- cessful meetings and the standard reached in both Clubs was at time very high, The Chinese Athletic Association also held their monthly meeting and the occasion proved a great success.

ROZA GIVES GREAT DIVING

EXHIBITION

At the V.R.C. fete, which was attended by a large gathering in- cluding Mrs. Borrett, wife of Major- General 0. C. Borrett, the handi- capping was a feature of the sport and close finishes were the order of the day. Even in the "C" and "D" Class events the handicapper did his work so efficiently that there was at times great difficulty in judging the winner

th

The 75 yards Medley race was the event of the day and the event fell to E. B. da Roza who awam. very well indeed to snatch victory from T. Paget. Roza and Paget were almost together over the first length, which had to be breast stroke. In the back stroke over the second length Roza obtained slight lead over Paget which he kept right up till the end. the final length home. Paget tried hard to reduce the lead that Roza had obtained hat failed to do so by a matter of a foot. H. M. Remedios was close up to the lead. ers all the way, but his back stroke and free style found him just a bit bebind and he had to be atisfied with third place.

THE Y.M.C.A.

One of the best diving exhibition seen for some time was given by F. da Roza, the Colony's cham- pion, who incidentally won cvent for diving from the Spring Men's 50 Yards Aggregate Handi. board. The team race (medley) was very exciting while the water polo formed a very suitable ending to an enjoyable night's swimming.

Y.M.C.A. FETE,

There was plenty of good fun at the Y.M.C.A. where the ingenuity of the organisers resulted in some The novel and interesting races. team race, four ladies against six men, each to swim one length, was something new, but from the start it was evident that the men could never to catch up. The men hud to be (mathematically) fifty per cent. faster than the ladies to dead-heat and of course they could not show that margin of superiority.

The Hong team race was another interesting feature and it was only after a gruelling struggle that the Hong Kong Bank won from the A.P.C with Jardines third. The Bank lead at the start, but the A.P.C. picked up towards the end and provided a thrilling finish in which they were only just beaten. The novelty race was quite an amus- ing one and taken all in all the night's entertainment, so far as the swimming went, was excellent. As in the V.R.C. dancing followed the sports.

CHINESE ATHLETIC,

The Chinese Athletic Association drew thousands of spectators to "their sports meeting, where the prin- cipal item was a medley race for a team of three. The Young Com- panion Athletic Association won this race with the "Chinese' Civil servants coming in second.

KIDNAPPED MAN RESCUED

SHANGHAI GANGSTERS WOUNDED IN POLICE RAID

Shanghai, July 2.-A series of successful raids by officers of the Settlement Police had a thrilling climax at 0 o'clock last night when the son of a wealthy silk merchant, held to ransom for the past twelve days, was rescued from a Rue Lafa yette house where he was being... kept hidden under armed guard, after a pistol battle on the roofs in which two gangsters were wounded. The Kidnapped man, Sung Meng Ti, aged about 3 years, an em ployees of the Bank of China, waa carried off by an armed gang while travelling in his motor-car along Sinza Road, near Kisochow Road," on June 20.

Acting on secret information re- reived, police commenced a round. up of suspected characters about §. o'clock on Saturday evening. "Six- teen persons were arrested at vari ous addresses. Yesterday evening, Louza Police learned that the kid- nappers were located at 550D. Rue Lafayette, one of a row of three- storey semi-foreign style dwellings, to which a party of about 95 Chi- detectives and police. from Lonza Station proceeded.

Surrounding the house, police then forced an entrance. All doors having been secured, all the occu- pants who may have been on the ground door had fled by the time the raiders gained admission, but in a room upstairs the kidnapped mon was found unarmed. Armed guards had meanwhile put up a fairly stiff resistance to their pur- suers, attempting to escape by the roof. A fusillade of shots "was fir- ed by police, and two of the gang- aters were brought down while en- deavouring to get away over the tops of adjoining houses, one being shot in the arm and the other graz ed on the forehend, besides receiv ing injuries in & fall.

.

"Two Chinese men and two women three pistola seized from the armed were arrested at the house, and

guards. The accused are expected to be brought up for remand before the Second Special District Court to-day-...N.
