Hats for the
Braids, fbre, straw-dull, shiny, ribbed, or corded-are mixed to- gether in different colours, and in corresponding colours in the new spring hats.
Leghorn straw, paper Panama, and picot are also used, and Le Monnier has made the most distin- guished of hate in black Leghorn. She has also made a white satin hat which is very exclusive in style, “and her small hats with low crowns ft- ting the head and encrusted with lacquered flowers are very wearable and modish.
Dull materials are trimmed with shiny ribbons or piece materials, and shiny materials are trimmed with something dull. Printed silks are used for closely draped hate, ribbons are ruched to make brims.
Plaid straws are shaped to jaunty. little hats and trimmed with one short quill, thrust either into the side or at the back to one side.
A MISSION OF WIT
When the hat was something that of the dress and coat with which it was bought without much thought was to be worn, it was frequently the kill-joy of the piece. Then it became a vassal, a subordinate fes ture of the ensemble.
Now it agrees with the ensemble, but has a clear mission of its own, and a very important one. It gives to the ensemble its note of bright ness, of cleverness, or wit.
The hair, the hat, the veil, and the complexion make a little group by themselves. And if you think about it, this is as it should be.
The head is what everyone looks at first, and if it be wrong, then who bothers about the dress and coat?
This spring there is to be calour in the hats and gaiety in the shapes And the way they are worn.
Quite little opidemic of veils prevails. Some are carried smooth- ly over the brow and across - the eyes, others are circular and left to lang loosely to the throat.
One woman appeared at tea in a wide meshed black veil with a tiny little fringe of black-and-white ostrich feathers, I had seen many chenille bordered voils, but.not one with feathers. I am now told that some have little soft cock's feathers as a fringe.
The spotted veil is also worn, but the favourite ia the little eye veil, 1ather wide and coarse in mesh.

Gone are the days when we pulled our hats on from the back of the head and let them stay put anyhow. A piled up creation of a hat such as our mothers wore in their youth might allow the question of angle to look after itself but with to-day's light and simple styles line is every- thing.

I mentioned last week, and they are even nicer than the pattern books led me to expect. I have not space to describe them at length but a few general observations may be of interest.
First colours: All the tawny autumn tints are in vogue, and one oan see a colour scale running from palest lemon through all the tones. of greige, beige, yellow and brown to orange and worm deep flame tints. Deep soft blues-working up the cold scale from greige, are also in evidence.
The designs are mostly formal, blocke, shadow plaids and waves being very noticeable, but in no case is the design hard and stylistic 88 it was a couple of years ago, here are very few floral patterns, but flowers are often used with design or blocks in the shadow
