Modifications in Design. With ships of thess huge dimen- sions it not possible to state pre- cisely what the gross tonnage will be when the vessels are completed, and frequently the final measure. ments differ considerably from the figures given at an early stage of construction. These variations are brought about by modifications in the design, and a comparatively small alteration on a large ship may vary the gross figure by a thousand or two tons. "The Nor stage of construction, and it is not mandie is in a fairly advanced likely that her gross tonnage will TILAWA" differ much from the figure given by Lloyd's Register in their annual returns 68,000. It is also possible that the Cunarder's horse-power will exceed that of the French ship.
