PAYNTER'S GALLANT

RESTORES HOPE OF AN ENGLISH VICTORY
AUSTRALIA NOW FIGHTING HARD FOR RUNS
{THROUGH REUTER'È AGENCY. ]
BRISBANE, February 14. THE fourth day's play in the fourth Test match was, like the previous day, characterised by the fluctuation of fortunes. England who were in a bad position at the end of the third day's play staged a come-back and brought her total to 356 before the fast wicket fell, thus securing a lead of 16 runs on the first innings.
Paynter proved to be the hers for the English side, for he not only took the fleld while he was under the doctor's orders to "tako a complete rest, but he also made 83 tons in what was
described by critics as a magnificently plucky innings."
Australia then went in for their second Innings and their post. tlon at the end of the day's play was none too bright, four of their batsmen, being seat back to the pavilion with but 108' runs on the board.

Paynter attempted bo hit Ironmonger for a boundary but nistimed the ball. It was the end of a gallant innings, and all the more credit is due to the batsman when it is taken into consideration that he in a sick man. He had scored 53 runs in 236 minutes during which time he scored 10 fours. His partnership with Verity realized 92 runs in 102 minutes and when he returned to the pavilion he was accorded a great ovation.
Mitchell took Paynter's place. but was doomed to score a “druck” for no sooner he arrived at the wicket than he got his leg in front of a straight 'un from O'Reilly, Verity was not out for 23. He played a dour innings and scored à lone boundary durig his stay at the wicket. Thus England scored d lead of 16 runs over her opponents on the first innings and as Dame Fortune appears to be in a parti cularly fickle mood in this match, those sixteen runs may prove to be the deciding factor at the end of the game.
