The Hou, Mr. San Ah Wing aak- ed whether Government was in a position to any whether it was in- tended to inipose a levy on salaries of Government officers, either. di- rectly or indirectly.

The official reply was that Goy. ernment would not be in a position to determine whether or not a levy on the substantive salaries of pub- lio servants was necessary until the amount of the savings that would accrue from, the many schemes of retrenchment now under considera tion, or in the process of being curried into effect, was known.

Mr. San Ah Wing also asked what retrenchment was proposed_in the Malayan Civil Service, The official reply was as follows:

Recruitment for the Malayan Civil Service was suspended after the arrival last year of nine cadets who had been appointed in 1931, Losses of personnel which occurred. during 1932 or are definitely fore -seen during 1933 amount to 23, of which five are assignable to ac celerated voluntary retirements, four to deaths, two to promotions outside the 'cadre and twelve to or dinary retirements..
