ENGINEERING & BUILDING

RAILWAY SPEEDS IN 1932

NINETY MILES" AN HOUR

GENERAL IMPROVEMENT

The year has been fortile in in toreating development in British railway speeds. The moat sperta oular of these is the Great Western i Railway's attack on its own record that was originally wat up in the autumn of 1931 on the Swindon | Paddington line by the so-called Cheltenham Flyer,

.

den the speed is the same as that of the Liverpool train, though the average for the whole journey works out at rather over 60 m.p.h. On other parts of the old L.N.W.R. there has been a marked reduction in cuuning times.

Propeller Thrust Conserved

SUCCESSFUL TRIALS IN

ITALY

Rome.-Interesting experiments have been carried out in Italy with a type of seroplane in which the thrust of the propeller is conserved instead of being dissipated in the wake of the machine...

The principle has been much dis cussed among aircraft engineers, but after ve years' work, Signor Stipa, designer at the Caprani Aeronauticaj Construction Com pany, has completed and tested in long distance fights, a type of machine putting these draught utilisation theories into actual practical use. No claim is made except that tests have been success

PALKNER COLLEOTION SALE

Relics of old English life, cen turies-old missals and breviaries, and manuscript prayers were sold at Sotheby's, London, last month They were in the collection formed by the late Mr. John Meade Falk ner, of Durham,

The Backland missat (Sarun use), English.14th century, was for. many years used at the "parish | church of Buckland, Berka. The Closworth missal, English early 18th century, was evidently the work of the Benedictine 1000- astory. The local sax view and hills had been used in the picture of the Crucifixion. The manu script fetched £230.

Of the welcome accelerations of the year on the Euston Has the most remarkable is the reduction of 23 minutes on the Liverpool Londen journey by the train lear ing Lime Street at 5.25 p.m.. 80 that the run of 152 miles between Crewe and Willesden is timed to occupy 142 minutes for the 152 miles an average speed of over 64 m.p.h. This is a fine performance, The speed of the Liverpool train is nearly equalled by one of the Man chester-London expresses, the Man eunian, that leaves London Road Station at 9.46 am and with a

On the Great Eastern section of the L.N.E.R. there has been no such marked shortening of journey times as the liberal timetables seran to allow, and Cambridge, Norwich, and Yarmouth are not much nearer Liverpool Street in time than they

were 10 years ago.

On the Southern Railwaw main line speeds this year are much as they were in 1931. Several im- portant towite, however, and Al- dershot is one of them. There is not a single-non-stop train from from Waterloo to that important military centre, and the shortest journey time is 60 minutos for the 33 miles. Horsham, which is the same distance from London, is little better off, and Godalming is also neglected.
