PRIZE DAY AT ST. PAUL'S COLLEGE

| SATISFACTORY YEAR OF PROGRESS: GOOD RESULTS IN STUDIES AND SPORTS

BISHOP OF VICTORIA DISTRIBUTES PRIZES

There was a very large gathering at St. Paul's College last 'night when the Annual Prize Distribution took place at the school, The Hon. Dr. S. W. Tso presided over the gathering and congratu- lated the school on the satisfactory year's work which they had just concluded: He then introduced the Bishop to the gathering and in so doing mentioned the interest which His Lordship took in the education of the Chinese,

The Headmaster, Rev. 4. D. Stewart, read the school report. in the course of which he mentioned the success at the recent University examination. He also stated that the college had been" successful in inter-school volley ball and that the long jump re- cord for Hong Kong schools was lowered by one of the students of the school during the year.

The Bishop of Victoria in a brief speech recalled the good work" done by the school and by the Stewart family in South China

The Headmaster's lleport for year 1932 was as follows:-

Local Education,

The fourth big fact was that though our local education was in many ways good,wa had on the average more pupils per teacher and more room with two classes ini one room than most other areas in the country.

The third part of my talk are the fruits of this survOY. Here, unlike Gaul, Tyneside was divided into two parts.

One-part said "We will not have our dirty linen washed in public." The other part said Have the publicity, thank God for the tann. dry." They were rather proud that we in Tyneside were not afraid to face facts Many things have hap pened since I left Tyneside but I will just mention these.

We were also twice inspected by the Medical Anthority for schools and received an excellent report on both occasions.

Attendance.

The enrolment of the past year was lower then that of recent years due largely, no doubt, to the fact that large numbers of schools have sprung up in the Colony of life. I understand that there are now 120 schools teaching English, two of which are at our very doors

The highest number enrolled dur ing the year was 330 and the aver- age attendance was 313.

As many as 18 have completed the year's attendance without a day's absence.

In order to carry this good work one step farther, they are planning to raise an endow ment fund the interest on which will enable them to offer a free scholarship to one of the night school studente enabling him to have free board and lodging in the Hostel as well as free tuition.
