ST. JOHN'S CATHEDRAL

WELL-ATTENDED ANNUAL MEETING

APPEAL FOR SPECIAL EFFORT TO MEET FINANCIAL LOSS

"A very heartening response to the Dean's appeal for a big st tendance at the annual church meeting of St. John's Cathedral, wad made by the congregation Nearly a hundred people were present yesterday evening at the Cathedral Hall for the year's business meeting, which followed tes provided by a Commities of the Council.

The Very Rev. Dean A. Swann presided, being supported by Professor G. A. C. Herklotts, Hon. Secretary, and Mr. G. S Archbutt, Treasurer and Chairman of the Finance Committee.

The Dean's review of the year showed a record of work satis- factorily maintained with a reduced staff, thanks to loyal helpers among the clergy. During Dean Swann's absence on leave in the mear future the Bishop is to take over the duties of Dean, and will preach and celebrate regularly in the Cathedral, having pro- mized to give a series of Lenten sermons on Sunday mornings dur- ing that season.

"A LOSS OF $8,800 DURING 1932

Mr. Archbutt had to report à loss on the year's working of $8,800 reducing the Accumulated Fund to $11,200. This compar ed with a loss of $9,109 in 1931. The Goodwill Scheme brought in $24,750 compared with $19,460 la 1930, when it was adopted, and a total of $12,900 for "pewrents and donations" in 1929.

Professor Harklotts, who is going on leave, rasigned the Secretaryship which Mr. W. C. Clark is taking over. Mr. Arch- butt, the Treasurer and Chairman of the Finance Committee, is continuing till April when Mr. A. Brearley will carry on the work.

One word about the future. As soon as I reach England I ́am com- missioned by the Cathedral Coun cil to and a suitable. man to bring out with me as Assistant Chaplain. Hitherto we have met with nothing but disappointment in the search which has been proceeding at in tervals for a long time past. I want you therefore quite definitely tho pray, that the right man may quickly be forthcoming. It is of the greatest importance that really Arst-rate young priest be found for work here. There are unlimited possibilities for such a one. Please, then, make it a mat- ter of conscience to pray that our need in this direction may be met

Now it only remains for me to say that in some ways I am really sorry to be going on leave. It is for instance quite painful for me to leave the Bishop so soon after his arrival, for I have in this short time come to have a great affection for him and a desire to do all I ean for him. And the friendship which has developed between me and large numbers of Cathedral people also pulls me back. But I hope that my opportunity for rekindling my devotion to our Lord which I shall have in the Church at home, and the chance of reading will fit me to serve God better on my return. And I must rely on you to see that the work here in Hong Kong goes forward.
