LADY POLLOCK DISTRIBUTES PRIZES AND CERTIFICATES

BISHOP HALL ON WOMEN'S POWER IN THE WORLD.

The annual speech day and prize-giving at the St. Stephen's Girl's College was held yesterday. The Right Rev. Bishop. Hall "was in the chair,"

There was a very large gathering of parents, pupils and friends in the school hall including, Lady Pollock; Miss. 5. Atkins, the Principal; Miss Cheung, Headmistress of the Fairles School; Miss Grifin; Miss Pope; Mrs. Finnigan; Bay, C.-L. Blan- chet; Mr. G. F. de Martin, Director of Education, and Dr. Andrew, Cheung.

A very enjoyable concert preceded the prize-giving. ·The ・・ quality of the singing and the artistic and varied nature of the- performance were outstanding. The programme included a very cleverly presented scene from The Taming of the Shrew" by the schoolgirls of the Upper Classes, and a sketch, "The Hiddle of the Night" given by the Lower classer the children imper apnating fairy dolls, being very good Indeed, The Chinese lan- tern dance to a Chinese refrain was both colourful and graceful while the pianoforte solo by Miss Lai Chung Yue was exceptionally well rendered,

It is a great pleasure to have him with us to-day and I am sure the School will benefit much by his wise guidance and advice. THE BISHOP'S ADDRESS

In rising to ask Lady Pollock to distribute the prizes the Right Rev. Bishop Hall, said that after hear- ing the school report it was un- necessary for him to say anything except to congratulate Miss Atkins and the school staff on, the very fine work during the past year.

The Bishop referred to the mugat- ficent service the school had render- od to all and said that he was proud to be able to congratulate them on behalf of the Church and its Com- munity.

Bishop Hall remarked that dur- ing the past six years in England it had been his priviledge to be able to visit daily the homes in the industrial part of England. He could say with very great convic tion that in every home the level of the family never rose that of the Mother, proving that it was the women who ruled the world and that in a sense man was at her mercy!

The speaker said that he was glad that we were able to repay China for this very beautiful island by giving her some of the things which God had given us and that one of vital importance-was that of the Christian woman,

"And that is why I regard the school and its work of greatest importance," con-. cluded the Bishop:

At the beginning of November the students organised and carried out an International Party, to which children of many different countries came. Ten different nationalities were represented and our guests kindly took part in the entertain ment, singing, reciting, or telling a story in their own langue, or do ing poniething characteristic of their land. It was an experiment in In- ternational Friendship well worth repeating and the hymn sung at the end "All people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord with cheerful voice" well expressed our feelings.
