SHANGHAI'S NEXT SETTLEMENT DAY
JANUARY 31 INSTEAD OF
CHINESE NEW YEAR
January 31 has been fixed by the Shanghai Chines Chamber of Com- merce as the oficial settlement day for all Shanghai Chinese merchants and business men.
The decision, which was recently reached by the chamber in com- pliance with instructions from Nan- king, is, however, believed in bust ness circles as being more official than practicalite
The traditional settlement day for Chinese has been the old ludar. New Year's eve. On that day, Chinese expect to collees every cent owing, and are expected on the other hand to pay every outstanding bill.
This year, it is pointed out, Now Year's eve falls on January 25, while January 31, the official settlement day, will be the fifth day of the first month in the lunar year:

DEATH OF MR. HO TU RECALLED
At yesterday's meeting of the Chinese Chamber of Commerco, the Chairman, Mr. Wong Kwong Tin, called upon those present to stand in silence for a short whilo, as a' tribute to the memory of the_ista: Mr. Ho Tu and the late Mr.. Yuen Kwan Sun.
The Chairman said that Mr. Ho· Iu had been identified with the Chamber for the past twenty years. and had served on its committee for a very long time. Mr. Ho had been prominently identified with social and business problems and had re presonted the Chaniber on special" committees on many occasions. The Into Mr. Yuen, said 'the Chairman, had also been à member for roughly. twenty years, during which time ho did much useful work.
The business of yesterday's meet- ing was of a formal nature, the only item of interest being a reference to the forthcoming trade exposition in Canton which will last from February 1 to March 18. A ropre- sentative from Canton, who was present at the meeting, told the Chamber that merchandise intended for the exhibition would be admit ted tax-free. He extended an in- vitation to Hong Kong merchants to participate.
This particular day, the fifth of the first month to a year, is significant day to many supersti- tious Chinese inerchants. It is marked off as the day to fete the God of Wealth, who is expected to REBELLION IN SPAIN help in accumulating throughout the year.

ROTARY CONVENTION IN BANGKOK
AN EXCELLENT START.
Bangkok's first Rotary Convention made an excellent start. In wel- coming some thirty-six representa tives from the southern sections of the district-Siam was able to send only one representative south to the last Convention the members of the Bangkok Club did not feel too embarrassed by the honour and the responsibility. They felt pride in their climate and confidence in the work of their reception committee, which has the past President as its hend. Then before the first even- ing was ended a Mulayam represen- tative added another factor to those two, one which should certainly help to ensure the autocess of the whole Convention.
In his address on the aims of the Rotary movement, the Raja Uds of Selangor revealed no new truth, stated no new viewpoint, but he thrilled bia hearers and made them feel that both this special gather ing and the ordinary activities of their Clubs are well worth while,
