TOLL OF CHILDBIRTH: MIN-

ISTRY'S WARNING

The seriousness with which H.M. Ministry of Health regards the present high level of maternal mor- tality is indiented in a circular letter which was despatched to local authorities on Aug 20.

The letter calls attention to the great importance of continuing the arrangement for a confidential in- vestigation into the circumstances. of material deaths similar to that which was carried out in conneo- tion with the work of the Depart mental Committee on Maternal Mortality and Morbidity.

The Committee pointed out that while the birth rate, the general death rate and the infant mor- tality rate had all substantially de- elined since 1911, the maternal mor tality rate from childbirth had renched 4.3 per thousand the equi- valent of a loss by death of 3,000 mothers a year.

After the examination of the circumstances of nearly 6,000 fa- talities the Committee stafel that at least half the deaths which had heen under review could have been prevented bad due forethought been exercised by the expectant mother and her attendant; a rea sonable degree of skill been brought to bear on the case; and adequate facilition for treatment been pro- vided.

Value of the Inquiry. The Committee was deeply im- pressed with the practical value of the investigation," It is stated by the Ministry in an accompanying Memorandum. "In order to save time and facilities the", tabulation of findings & new and simpler re port form has been drafted which it is hoped, will prove convenient in use."

.......” The result of this memoranduma

is that the Fall devumstances the great majority of maternal deaths will be available for plans ning. futuro alterations in local services and in medical training, a subject which, it has been recently Auggested, should form the subject of a general inquiry, su

A remarkable tribute to the value of the methods of inquiry used by the Committee, which will now be extended until further notice, was paid by Lady Barrett, Consulting Obstetricium and Gynaecologist to the Royal Free Hospital.

"Tile Committea's line of inquiry, of investigating where the first wrong turning was taken, was de scribed by Lady Barrett as now, and most promising, while, se omplit- sised the point that much of the knowledge which is at present available consorting maternal treatment is not yet generally ap
