Increased Production.

In the seven years before 1990 the output of petroleum rose, by 62 per cent. Between 1028 and 1929 the production of electrical power rose in the United States by 33 per cent; in Canada by nearly 50 per cent; in France by 38 per cont; in Great Britain by 40 per cent, and in Japan by 43 per cent.

"Monetary Black,"

Д

An interesting addendum to these observations is contained in extract from the Quarterly Review of J. Henry Schroder and Co. It is thore pointed out that an im. mohse amount of monetary slack will have to be pulled in before trade activity will make much im pression on interest rates. The capital market has been practically closed for three years, and though the incomes of the investing classes have been curtailed, savings have not been stopped.

"On the contrary, it is known that many people, partly owing to belief that private economy was good for the country, and partly because they were uncertain as to their future incomes, have been cut- ting down expenditure and ac- cumulating money at their banks. Many also, owing to general jack of confidence, have sold securities and refrained from reinvesting the proceeds.

Obviously, such increased produce tivity must inevitably have brought about a fall in prices. That is the proper and the only method of pass ing on the benefit of increased pro- ductivity to the consumer. Nor would such a fall, kept within re- asonable proportions, bo undesir able. On the contrary, one would say that it would be everybody's interest
