He was very well known in Germany, where he was con- sidered a danger to the future of the German chemical industry.

When Bolshevism came into power in Russia, Professor Ipatieff, who was then a professor in the Imperial Artillery Academy of St. Petersburg, felt he did not want to leave Russia, being sure that he could work for his country even under the rule of the Bolsheviks. The military beads of the Red Army thoroughly well understood the valué of Prof. Ipatieff's services, and did everything they could pos- sibly do for him as a chemist and a private individual.
