the political situation in Japan. Siam is, after all, a part of this changing world, and we had no right to expect that she would de- velop entirely on her own lines, unaffected by world events.
Anyhow things have happened, and one, can but hope that both the Royal Family and the People's Party will combine to guide the new development wisely and peace- fully. Certainly there is reason to hope that the change in the 'nd ministration will be effected quite
peaceably. After all, the action takon by the People's Party ̧yes- terday was revolutionary, and few capitals can have passed through a revolution with so little evidence of disturbance. The police were patrolling the streets as usual, very few shops were closed, there was comparatively little excitement. Further everyone was struck by the cleverness with which the People's Party brought off a complete sur- prise. It was in that respect. a repetition of the arrests effected on July 22, 1017. There had been much talk beforehand, but nothing happened, and the danger passed out of mind. But none the less the whole thing had been planned out in fullest detail, and carried out according to plan. The Feople's Party aim, not at the abolition of the monarchy, but at the establish Iment of a constitutional monarchy, and one may hope for a peaceful solution of the problem.
