PROBABILITY OF LOCAL
INFECTION..
I a statement issued yesterday by Dr, G, W. Pope, M.O.H., to i representative of, the Hong, Kuny Daily Press it with stated that ap to 4.00 pas. yesterday there had heen 37 cases of Cholers reported and deaths. None of these were European. On Wednesday there were Heven cuves and Brie case yesterday up to 4 p.in.
D. Pope said the situation had become rather serious in the last 48 hours but as yet there was indication that a general quarentine will be placed on the port.
The authorities are working un der a handienp as they have so far been unable to trace the origin of the deseuse. It. was stated that it was highly improbable that all of these cases wero imported and the infection in some cases is believed to be of local origin.
Precautionary. Maaguras.
The only precautions that should be observed are those that have been published earlier and great care should be taken to me that all water is bailed and that all food stuffs should be cooked. There is A plenty of anti-oxin in the colony but more is being manufacture Against any unforseen posibility.
According to Dr. Pope, the death rate in a choisin epidemic averages about 50 per cent, although in the earlier stages of the epidemic
One of 100 per cent. is common. the strange features of a cholera opidemic is that while the desens is extremely virulent at the begin ing, it stems to lose its virulence ab the epidemic progresses. The reason for this is due to many causés, one of which is the weather,
