The railway known as the Singa pore Railway was brought intol operation in the year 1903, and ran from Tank Road to Woodlands, afterwards bging extended to Tan jong Pagar and Pasir Panjang, on January 1, 1912, that railway was taken over by the Federated Malay States Railways, and connection ba tween the Singapore Railway and the northern line through foboro was made by means of steam ferries gcross the Johore Straits.

Finding a New Sito... Shortly after the speaker took up duties as general manager and chief engineer on January 3, 1927, he ad vised the Railway Board and the Chief Secretary to Government that. he was not in favour of the sehemu they had passed. He was then given authority to defer any action until he had thoroughly investigat ied the whole subject and had con forred with the Colonial Govern ment, the Singapore Municipal Commissioners, the Singapore Im- Chamber of Commerce and the provement Trust, the Singapore Chinos Chamber of Commerce.
As a result, all previous schemes were condemned, they were numer us, one including doubling of the railway from Johore Bahru to Tank Road, and after meetings with the various authorities had taken place the scheme which has been con- structed and is to be opened to-day, was approved at a Conference, held int Government House, Singapore,
on March 24, 1928.
Comfort and Convenience.
The station building was designed for the railway department by Mosers, Swan and Maclaren, architects. The senior partner of that Brm, Mr. Atkin-Borry, in 1927 made visite to various English rail- way stations, The comfort and convenience of the passengers have been studied, amplo accommodation has been provided for Arst-class, second-class, and third-class passer- gers, refreshment foams, dining rooms, waiting rooms, mail-rooms, parcel-room, telegraph office, hair- dresson's shop, dressing rooms and lavatorios have been provided.
